HASSAN ABDAL, Pakistan (RNS) Sikhs from all over the world assemble at Gurdwara Panja Sahib each year for a religious ritual on the eve of Vaisakhi (sometimes known as Baisakhi), a centuries-old festival that also marks the spring harvest. This year, some 8,000 Sikh pilgrims arrived from as far as Scandinavia and Australia to spend 10 days of religious pilgrimage in three cities. Pronounced “VA-sock-ee,” the festival, which fell on Monday (April 14), marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year and commemorates the founding of the Khalsa (spiritual sister- and brotherhood) in 1699.

lol @ VA-sock-ee

its the new year/harvest time in the indian subcontinents calendar. baisakhi, vaishakhi, vishu, bihu.. same thing different place.

Re: Baisakhi fest

Does it start every year in April?

Re: Baisakhi fest

its the first day of the month of vishakh on the hindu calendar, and runs from mid april to mid may. (poila boishakh for the bengalis)
i think it varies by a day or two, im not sure.

Re: Baisakhi fest

Hindus, Bengalis, and Punjabis are using same calendar? but with little variation in names of months..?

Re: Baisakhi fest

yup. the local/native calendar in all the different parts of india - not just punjab and bengal - (vishu is from kerala, bihu is from assam) are pretty much the old sansrkit calendar with month names modified in local language.

Re: Baisakhi fest

I don't know the punjabi months, baisakhi being one of them.

Re: Baisakhi fest

one thing i do NOT understand is that why Pakistani Muslims celebrate Baisaakhii? Indian Muslims never celebrate this festival. we always associated this festival with Hindus and Sikhs. :hmmm:

Re: Baisakhi fest

its not celebrated as such, we used to have festivals like Jash e Baharan which was more like celebrating the spring than anything else.

Re: Baisakhi fest

oh i see...makes sense...baisakhi is also about celebrating the harvest season...jashn e bahaaraaN...sounds so nice! :)
