In the tradition of the Basant thread. What’re some of the characteristics of this particular festivity? I know that it has something to do with harvest but don’t know much about it. Chann ji, time for you to use your time in more productive way than playing pacman in the arcade. ![]()
Basant is more related to the change of season while Vaisaakhi is related to harvest season. Vaisaakhi is celebrated with organising melas on various religious and cultural places in Punjab. Basant was never celebrated so massively as is done by Lahoris now. It was much more milder than Vaisaakhi. Vaisaakhi melas on sufi mazaars, hindu mandirs, gurdwaras and khoohs, chhappaR kanDay...it was mostly rural festival of farming communities with very strong folk undertones.
That folk and secular nature of Vaisaakhi changed for ever when on the viasaakhi of 1699 Guru Gobind singh called upon the sikhs who had gathered for vaisaskhi mela and baptised them to be Khalsa sikhs. After that sikhs started it as their religious birthday. I assume that it diverted on religious lines from that time on..on the other hand we have very later examples of pre-partition Punjab when Vaisakhi was still a secular festival..e.g. on the Vaisakhi day of 1919 in Jallianwala baagh in Amritsar the people who were fired upon in the gathering had gathered there to celebrate vaisakhi and actually the gathering took shape of a political rally to protest the arrest of two prominent leaders from Amritsar..one of whom was a muslim...people owho got killed in masscre belonged to all 3 religions. Many of them belonged to villages around the city..the people who were there probably not for the political rally but for mela vekhan. mela vekhan aye kaaboo aa gaye vichaare.

I think it was a turning point for Punjabis altogether. I think the brits showed their fangs on this one. Sometimes people forget that Jallianwalla Bagh wasn’t just a “Sikh thing” but it affected Punjabis from all religions. Thanks for bringing it up Chann jee!
Here is an informative article on Jallianwala bagh.
haaN Chann ji, now I remember. I never liked that Guru Gobind guy that much. We specially didn't get along well after what he did to vaisaakhi.

And do you know why did he do that ?? What he did was right in that context. And then you mention, "we" did not get along well.We do not need to associate ourselves with our ancestors. Otherwise every hindu should hate every muslim and every sikh sould hate every muslim and many other combinations of hatred.
That was past , and if you dig up past , you can find atleast one reason for any pair of human being to hate each other. We can leave behind the past and leave in harmony , all what is needed is to leave behind the past and forget the hatred!
Peace and Love!
Indian_teen sister, don't bother about this Roman dude. He has a habit of insulting other people's religious figures. I bet he is a sunni maulvi..very bitter and frustrated...probably needs another wife to calm down.
As for not getting along..he can't get aong with his own hands anymore...they refuse to do what he wants them to do.
pra jee ..I m not sister ..I m brother ;)
take care !
oops...saaary yaar. waise photo toN barhe koolay koolay jihe lagday oh tusi...mainu bhulekha paye giya si.;)
The minute a teen boy walk in on gupshup, Chann is all over him. This guy is unbelievable.
:k:
Espicially true in Punjab. Hate is a horrible thing. There are good and bad amongst all people. Punjabi history is filled with many examples of peace and harmony. Lets consider each others in a human context before we go off judging each other as Muslims, Hindus etc.
