Dowry is also not allowed in Islam. Same concept, you're taking her inheritance money basically and making her buy your furniture and TV from it.

I believe we all know that practice of demanding the money and things from the wife's family is incorrect. She was just pointing out to me that this is a manner in which they expect DIL to mint money for them.

On the topic of financial contribution, a hassle free way to do it is to calculate a per person share of money based on approx monthly expenses of running the household. When a new person (ie DIL) comes in, the expenses will obviously go up and the son will end up contributing more.
However, where the contribution comes from - i.e. son's salary or wife's salary or mix of both is for the couple to decide and nobody else's business. Same goes for how the son and DIL choose to spend the rest of their money. Demanding that the wife pay up or buy things from her own salary is pretty cheap imo.

Ghar-damaads are perceived negatively by society. That's why its up to progressive women, like the ones on this forum, to not care about what society thinks, start marrying them, and bring about a change.

One who moves into their spouses house with the spouses family will have more adjustments and compromises to make, new rules to follow and more expectations to live up to. The latter will have more control and leverage. Since lack of control and leverage in their marriages is a common lament of desi women, they should look into the* ghar-damaad* option.
