The situation in Pakistan is truly distressing. I’m not saying that street harassment is a complete non-issue in the West. However, it is nothing compared to what happens back home. Women’s access to public space is severely limited.

That said, I think it’s unfair to prostitution for all this. The profession is like any other. A service is provided and money is charged. People mistaking random women for hookers would not happen (that much) if sexual service providers were allowed to advertise there services openly. This wouldn’t eliminate street harassment though. That has more to do with our culture in Pakistan and our collective attitude towards women in the society.

Women are thought of as property. A women who is out and about without a man is seen as fair game.
