Sometimes even I have to remember the incident and location to remember which class I was studying then, like "jab maine khatra ke sign board utara thaa tab hum rajasthan mein thee aur Shaktimaan serial shuru hua tha" then it strikes my jat brain that I was in class seven then.
I think Hindu people are more into keeping record of exact dates of birth, etc. Muslims in almost all rural areas didnāt follow that. My uncles have a fake date of birth on their ID cards due to this
I studied in nine school for twelve classes hence the confusion.
Only forward class of Hindus and even Muslims keep records of date and hereditary lines. Every syed I know has "Hereditary line", I think it is called Shajarah, similarly My saas has record of her entire linage spanning six thousand years of her ancestor ending in Maharishi Vashisth of Ramayan:D
Jat only remember their gothram that means lineage, SCs etc also have gothra name to identify their lineage too but no one gives a damn about them:D
Mine were definitely monkeys of Kandahar, god wouldn't have kept them in Eden gardens even then, they would have destroyed garden and would have named it barbad bagh:D

I think this trend of linking years with some events was also common in Arabs. Like they said 'year of elephents - Aam ul feel' for referring to attack by Abrah on Makka.
Old people in certain communities did not remember dates of important events in their lives. They had different system for remembering those events.
I heard my dadi keeping record of events connected with other events. Some of the events she used to quote:
Tumhare Tayaa unn dino 1 saal ke the jab Hindu Pakistan choR kar ja rahe the.
Tumhare Tayaa ki mehndi wale din blackout tha.. yaad nahin aa raha Ayub wali jang thi ya Yahya wali :D
Have you people ever heard your elders connected events in this manner?
Still some one recalls that ...like Yeh tab ki baat hai jab Indira Gandhi ko shoot kia gaya tha....:(
Even they use two family events like jab hamari shadi hui thi tab wo bachi/bacha 2 saal ki thi ..etc

A few days ago my Ammi went to attend a wedding of family friends who belong to rural area. The bride was 10 years elder than the groom. My cousin's 9-10 year old daughetr waswith Ammi and the groom's mother told my Ammi 'Jab meri shadi hui thi, to meri hone wali bahoo iss bachi jitni thi' :)
I still connect events according to the events of the same period... dates are easier to forget than important events themselves. Even among friends we still say "remember the year ....such and such.... happened?" Its just simple imprinting of events on our minds. Numbers are hard to picture unless theres a direct connection to the event between the numbers such as the score in a football game will be easier to remember becuase most of the item your keeping locked in your memory is numbers anyway so the dates easier to note in the mind. Wheras a tragic event or something that really moves you will take precedence over exact figures in the mind... if you were unlucky enough to be chased by a gang for example you might not know exact numbers or how long you ran for but you might remember important landmarks or faces in the crowd.
