I have always noticed that it is polticians that we are blaming . but have you ever thought that if politicians were good enough .. would have this country still worked out ?

Even the worst politician is supported by some people. In a democratic environment every one deserves respect.
Politicians make use of the common interests of people to gain political power. In a country like Pakistan with so many ethnical and relegious groupings seperating people it is not easy to find a common interest of every person. For example, (during political compaigns) If one (or a few) politician claims to build dams to develop this country and thus try to gain public support, many others will oppose that idea and they will still gain support.
Some smart politicians like Bhutto can attract the majority of people with their political agenda, but then the religion-factor can still be used by their opponents and a general is always there to rule.
I have always noticed that it is military that we are blaming . but have you ever thought that if generals were professional enough .. would have this country still worked out ?

If only we had politicians who had the interest of the country at their heart and not their bank balances. The civilian rule between 1987 to 1999 was one of the worst period in our history (Zia's misrule not withstanding).

The worst period of rule in Pakistan even worst then the 87-99 rule was Bhattu's seven years of totallitarian tyrany...

I ave only heard stories about that time, was not in pakistan and was too young anyways.
Maybe you can start a diff thread where we can compare and contrast the pros and cons, success and failure of diff regimes. It could be an enlightening discussion. I for one would like to now more about that time frame and some specifics about BBs first term, zia’s rule and personal accouts and impressions of ppl, data, stats.
I am not being cheeky here. I really think that it would be a good thread.

Yup absolutely true. The army might not have great political strategists in their ranks but it is certainly more educated and disciplined than some of the feudal industrialists who occupy seats in the national assembly.

That is true.
Before ZAB Pakistan was on par with the likes of South Korea, but his massive nationalization policies put us back near the bottom. Even today we are still trying to undo the economic devestation that man inflicted on Pakistan.
