Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

Alright readers…what were your favorite books or authors from your childhood/adolescence. Don’t know if this topic has been done before, but I felt a wave of nostalgia and decided to create a thread.

I’ll start…

The Berenstein Bears…I would read one after another. Probably my most favorite series.

Amelia Bedelia!!!

Judy Blume!!! I’ve read practically every book of hers. From elementary to adolescence to adulthood. I feel like I grew up on her books.

LM Montgomery…Read almost all her books. Anne of Green Gables series. Emily Series and others.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

Roaldh Dahl books....

Matilda was read so often that the edges are frayed. The Witches...it's a creepy read...even for adults.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

A Hameed who wrote ‘Ainak Wala Jin’ and a series on Muslim scientists, which was dramatised as Anokha Safar.

Roald Dahl for sure.

Personal favourites are fantastic mr fox and danny the champion of the world.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

My childhood favorites..

Judy Bloom books (each and every single one is near and dear to my heart! and now my boys are reading some too!)

Beverly Cleary..another one my childhood favorite authors…the Ramona Quimby books were the best!

Laura Ingalls Wilder/Little House on The Prairie series (not ashamed to admit I still read some when I’m feeling nostalgic)

In my pre teen years:

Sweet Valley High
Babysitters Club

^ :rotfl:

And then of course, all the VC Andrews books…some were flat out scary and cringe worthy, but strangely addictive!

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

JUDY BLUME!!!

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

Basically everything by Enid Blyton. The St. Clares, Famous five, Secret Seven, The Faraway tree series and many more that I can't remember. I loved Anne of green gables, Nancy drew, Goosebumps, Fear Street, Harry Potter and .. Sweetvalley (You have no idea how difficult it was to smuggle the book Elizabeth's first kiss from under my mother's nose at the cash counter). And obviously all the classics like Tale of two cities, Jane Eyre, Little Women, War and Peace etc. The life of Pi was my absolute favourite book in the 7th grade and I was so excited to see the movie adaptation. By the end of the 7th grade I had moved onto Anne Rice and Stephen King. Horror and vampires obviously won out.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

^How could I forget the Goosebumps series!!!!! My favorite one is Terror Tower. I've turned off the classroom lights and read Terror Tower to my students several times. They loved it.

Lois Duncan: Author of the book that became the movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer. I've read almost all her books. Killing Mr. Griffin, Down a Dark Hall, Daughters of Eve, Ransom, Stranger with My Face, Don't Look Behind You, Summer of Fear. They were as addictive as the Goosebumps.

Katherine Patterson Books: Bridge to Terebithia, The Great Gilly Hopkins, much later....Jacob have I Loved

Lowis Lowery: Number the Stars, The Giver...later on Gathering Blue

Dracula...the original version. The cover was creepy and the copy was worn from so so much reading

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

It seems that children fascinated by horror more than adults.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

What a lovely thread!! Kiya Kiya Yaad karwa diya

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

All of the If you give a mouse a cookie.... books.
Ruby the copycat
Amelia Bedelia
Tale of Peter Rabbit
Curious Georage
Junie B. Jones books
Baby sitter club books, loved these!
Goosebumps series
Chronicles of Narnia series

and soo much more, not all coming back to me yet

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

another enid blyton fan here. the famous five was the perfect series for kid me - an island for the kids, secret tunnels, damnnnn still gives me happy goosebumps. never really got into the seven seven - was too weak compared to FF. the three investigators was amazing - jupiter jones <3 again tunnels, hidden headquarters away from grown ups. resonated so well.

graduated onto the hardy boys and nancy drew series.. these were just okay in retrospect, but at least there were a ton of books in each series. the case files series for both were just pathetic. kissing and relationships? eyuck.

had to read old classics like mill on the floss, oliver twist, great expectations... very depressing, but definitely left a significant mark.

and a whole lot of short stories - ruskin bond being my fav - and comics both english and my native language.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

Other childhood favorites: Island of The Blue Dolphins, A Wrinkle In Time, Bridge To Terabithia

Does anyone remember the Mrs Piggle Wiggle series??? I LOVED those in early elementary school…I tried to introduce them to my kids when they were starting to read but I was just met with blank stares and WTF looks :vivo:

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

^Yes. My third grade teacher read Mrs. Piggle Wiggle to us..and so I bought a book from the series. I enjoyed the read aloud in class and the copy I owned, but don't recall getting as into it as the other series.

Island of the Blue Dolphins, Bridge to Terebithia, Tuck Everlasting were assigned class novels.

Didn't read Nancy Drew until I had a reading assignment in a graduate course. It was alright, I found it annoying that Nancy was described as perfect in every way. Sweet Valley High....could never get into them. Babysitter's Club...might have read a book partially, but couldn't get into that series either.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

@redvelvet you read Dracula as a child?
I pissed myself as an adult!!!

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

Yes, it was the original version. A Scholastic purchase from maybe 3rd or 4th grade. The cover alone gave me creeps and each time I finished reading it, I had to put it back in the cabinet, away from sight. The thought of it lying around on a table made me uneasy, as though the picture might come to life. I was not as particular with other books though, lol.

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

Lois Duncan - loved her books!
L.M. Montgomery - I went to see her home/museum when I was in P.E.I.
Nancy Drew
Beverly Cleary’s Ramona Quimbey series
Amelia Bedelia - I read it to my nieces now!
Sydney Taylor’s All of a Kind Family

And yes, I am guilty of reading the SVH books :sid:

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

Yay!!!! Another Lois Duncan fan!!!! Do you know she has a book titled, Who Killed My Daughter, which is her own story? I went through all the Anne series but my favorite was the Emily series, it was read more often and I identified better with Emily Murray. Probably my favorite from Montgomery's works is The Blue Castle.

Roald Dahl, Judy bloom, Mary Kate and Ashley, Harry Potter, Karen's sister or something like that . Sigh- MEMORIES!

Re: Back to the Past: Childhood Faves

People, it’s Blume!!! Not Bloom!!! :smack:
