With allthe noise over the upcoming release of that 25th Anniversary Back to the Future Trilogy on Blu-ray, fans are half-expecting Universal to use this time to announce a remake. Perhaps such an idea would’ve sounded crazy a few years ago, but with '80s-related films like ‘The Karate Kid’, ‘The A-Team’ and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ all arriving in 2010 – with plans to produce more remakes of ‘Short Circuit’, ‘Private Benjamin’, ‘Poltergeist’ and ‘Conan the Barbarian’ – it would appear as if Hollywood has come down with a severe case of '80s remake fever. But will that also include a beloved favorite like ‘Back to the Future’](Back to the Future (1985) - Movie | Moviefone)?
Cinematical spoke with ‘Back to the Future’ co-creator/writer/producer Bob Gale in advance of the new Blu-ray release, and we asked him about a potential remake. “I wouldn’t support [a remake]”, Gale told us in a firm, no-nonsense voice. “We don’t want to do a remake, and we don’t want to do a part four. We’ve seen franchises that go back too many times; they do one too many sequels, or remake something that should not have been remade. Bob [Zemeckis] and I are real happy with the way the movies are as they now exist, and we will do the opposite of what everyone else does and say leave well enough alone – let’s not tamper with the past.”
