Baby girl names

Hi ladies,

I wanted some opinions on the names we are considering for our baby girl due in May. Here the top contenders: Eman, Zinnia and Dahlia. My husband’s last name is Rehman. I really like Zara and Mishal too but he was vetoed them for now as some relatives already have those names.

We love the name Eman but it rhymes with Rehman. Does Eman Rehman sound too strange?! Thanks so much!!!

Re: Baby girl names

My niece's name is Emaan. Its nice :)

Re: Baby girl names

Out of the three, I like Eman best. But, I think it looks better spelled with an I as opposed to an E.

In uni, I knew a girl named Imani. Her parents decided to put a diff spin on the name, Iman. A Muslim coworker had a daughter named Amani...though I'm not sure if it was a variant of Iman. So, you can explore the option of adding an "i" at the end if you don't like that it rhymes with Rehman. You can ask an expert of the Arabic language if adding an "i" would change the meaning of the original name and if it doesn't then that's a possibility to explore.

I don't think it's a big deal that the first and last names rhyme; it doesn't sound strange. And I highly doubt that people will go around calling her Eman Rehman for the heck of it.

Re: Baby girl names

OP, I did a google search on Imani and it means "faith" and is a variant of Iman/Eman.

Re: Baby girl names

Imani and Amaani are lovely names.. so is Eman..

Eman Rahman sounds weird. So does amani rahman. I am almost tempted to say amani rahmani.

I like Mishaal the most, out of all the ones you mentioned.

Baby girl names

How about a middle name? Maybe that could serve as a break between the rhyming names?
Eman is a very pretty name. It's my daughter's middle name as well but I spell it as Iman.

Re: Baby girl names

Good grief, how often will she be called Eman Rehman out loud? The first day of school when teacher takes roll? As she walks across the stage to get her diploma? I highly doubt that she's going to be called "EmanRehman" on a daily basis. My first and last names don't rhyme, but when said fast enough they can sound very similar to each other and Alhumdolillah I haven't been teased as it's difficult enough for non Desis and non Muslims to even pronounce and remember my first name....that they don't bother with my last name.

You can opt to add a middle name to break things apart but even so....I think she'd more likely be called by her first and last name in something like an academic setting. You could also opt for Zinnia and Dahlia....but I'm not crazy about either of those names. Dahlia can morph into "Dolly"....shudders....or "dalliah"..which I think is Urdu for some Desi breakfast....porridge perhaps? :/

I like Mishal better than Daliah and Zinia....but I've a feeling that it'll morph into "Michelle" if you live in the West.

Re: Baby girl names

Thanks for the input ladies. I like Mishal but live in Canada and I think everyone here would always pronounce it Michelle. I really still like Zara though. Anyone have any suggestions for other good Z names? I was thinking of Zahara but my husband doesn't like that.

I'm thinking we could add a middle name: so Iman Zara Rehman and that would break up the fact that Iman and Rehman rhyme. And that way I can get both the names i like in there too!

Re: Baby girl names

whatever you call her just dont name her maryam. i know sooo many people who have that name. In one of my classes at uni there are about 6 maryams and you can probably imagine the confusion when the name is called without a second name. what makes is worse that my class only has about 14 people in it... with nearly half of them being called maryam.

a class of maryams lol.

i quite like the names, Bano, and Noor.

Re: Baby girl names

Summerfruits - one of my sisters in law is named Mariam and the other one is Noor. So those names are out for that reason! lol

Re: Baby girl names

How abt Eman Zainab Rehman?

Names with Z
- Zoya
- Zeemal

Re: Baby girl names

love Zoya!
What about Zayna/Zeina?
Zareen?

Amani was one of the names on our list. It is super cute and has a beautiful meaning too.

Re: Baby girl names

Eshaal is an option - personal favourite as its my baby girls' name :)

Re: Baby girl names

I like Zara spelled as Xara.

^ That's my cousins daughters name... it's unique, defo... but it reminds me of text-speak.

Re: Baby girl names

I like Zoya but my husband likes Zoha better. I think Zoha is growing on me too. As for Zainab that's my sister's name. (And we call her Zaina a lot too) I love Eshal but that's my cousin's name.

So many of the good names are already taken!!! Sucks! My good friend's daughter's name is Daniya. I really like that name also.

Re: Baby girl names

It’s the only Desi name I like seeing with an X. Xainab looks kinda strange. :hehe:

I feel like Zara with a Z is so mundane and overdone. Might as well give it a diff spin.

Re: Baby girl names

I have two friends who named their daughter Eshal. I've heard it pronounced in two ways....as E-shawl...and Ee-shul. I think the latter sounds prettier. I have heard that it means flower of Jannat. I will admit that I am very skeptical about this being the definition...is there any authentic source that can confirm this? I dunno. But the largest Muslim baby names website has some dubious meanings listed for names that one has to be careful about.

Ok yeah... Xainab and Xaira get on my nerves lol
Eshaal is getting popular, my husbands 4 different cousins all had girls in the past 2 yrs... Eshaal, Aroush, Minaal and Rania.
