Baby girl name Laila

Hello everyone,

Just wondering what people think of the name Laila for a baby girl. My husband and I both like the name because it sounds pretty, however, I am not so fond of the meaning.

It means “night” or “dark beauty”

Are these meanings bad? Or are they neither bad nor good? I feel a GOOD MEANING for a name is something more like wise, noble, honest, loving, pious etc.

My hubby and I rarely ever agree on the same name. I think this is only the second girl name we have both ever agreed on (the first name we agreed on has been taken by my daughter).

I still feel odd about the meaning though. What does everyone think? Thanks.

I love Laila but like you it’s the dark beauty part that I’m unsure about… I dunno. I’d keep looking if you’re still concerned.

Re: Baby girl name Laila

La’il = night

it’s doesn’t have a bad meaning. night is considered peaceful, time for 'ibaadaat, forjoy/bliss etc.

i wouldn’t hesitate naming my daughter.

Re: Baby girl name Laila

^ agree laila is derived from الليل
which is literally the arabic word for night in arabic. Nothing more.

Wow, I’m surprised at the apparent meanings.. I’ve always thought it’s such a pretty name..

I love the name Laila/Layla…have always wanted it for my daughter if I ever have one. :frowning:

Re: Baby girl name Laila

I’ve always liked this name, though I did get some resistance to it. Night is a time of reflection and prayer. This is not a bad thing.

Re: Baby girl name Laila

I’ve always thought it was a nice name too but it’s wayyy overused which is my only issue with it. I find more non-arabs/muslims keep it than muslims/arabs these days too so it no longer seems like a traditional arabic name.

Re: Baby girl name Laila

Laylatul Qadr is the object of every Muslim’s desire during Ramadan - can’t be a bad thing! what if you added another name like Humda (praise) or something so the name had more of a meaning than just ‘night’
