Baby Development Book Suggestions??

can you please recommend some good baby development/parenting books?

I have been reading a lot of pregnancy books and think it would be reassuring to have something to read on baby development.

Re: Baby Development Book Suggestions??

The only books I've referred to are the What to Expect when you're Expecting series. They did give me another book at my doc's office..wasn't as detailed as these ones.

^ Yeah I had that. And all those Babycenter emails. They kept me informed :D

Re: Baby Development Book Suggestions??

Yes I registered on babycenter.com as well. I still get the updates on my 8 year old and 5 year old :D!

There’s also at least one iPhone App with the same info.

I should read more books. :bummer:

Apparently, the happiest baby on the block, is amazing. I've been recommended it by several people.

Re: Baby Development Book Suggestions??

I have it and didn't think it was that great.... the whole book just keeps repeating the same things.....the 5 S's (swaddling, side/stomach position, shhhing, swinging, and suucking) doing the 5 S's in order will calm a fussy baby....the book really focuses on colicky babies. The author's point of view is that babies need a fourth trimester (birth - 3 mos) in which parents should try and mimick the babies environment in the womb.

What I did like about the book was that it tells parents that they shouldn't be worried about spoiling babies under 3 mos....so if you have a newborn that will only sleep in your arms let them, if the baby will only calm when rocked then do it.... it allows parents to do what feel natural without worrying that their babies will be too dependednt....it says to gradually reduce these things as the baby gets older. This I liked because many people kept telling me to let my son cry it out in the crib and I knew that this was not the right approach for him and continued to rock him to sleep, now that he's getting a little older I'm slowly reducing what I do to get him to sleep.
