We are expecting our first baby in January 2015. Due to commitment, I have to travel USA by end of November or mid december. I cannot leave her here in middle east alone. So, Here, We have medical insurance which covers all expenses. But for international delivery, insurance covers only $5K.
We will stay near Dr citrus height, California. I was going through nearest hospital cost for normal delivery and C section (in worst case scenario.) I took $21k quote from (Mercy San Juan) nearest hospital.
You might also want to check with the airline you’re traveling with. Most airlines don’t let passengers travel past 6-7 months of pregnancy.
Vaginal birth would be around 25k-30k, plus epidural etc. A C-sec can be 45-50k …
Can’t you have family come and stay with your wife while you travel? Inshallah she’ll go full term and you won’t have to worry
I’m sure you can buy insurance and I would definitely recommend it! It can easily cost $50,000. Try contacting Blue Shield/Anthem Blue Cross and see what they say…you should be able to buy temporary insurance that covers delivery.
From what I know, you will not be able to get travel/temporary insurance for your wife. Insurance companies in US will not sell you any plan because your wife is near delivery, even if she was in her first trimester, it would have been difficult to buy insurance for her.
Without insurance it will be very expensive and if for any reason you need to go to emergency, that is super expensive !!
The practical and cheaper alternative may be for you to take her to Pakistan and have her stay with her family. Hire someone full time to help and you tell your US school/client/employer that you may need to go to Pakistan for a week or whatever amount of time in January as you are expecting a kid and logistically having your wife accompany you to US was not doable.
To be frank if there is a desire to have the kid be born in US for citizenship, that’s okay and is then a different conversation, but otherwise the suggestion above will be most practical, least risky and straight forward.
First an unwanted advise : I do not believe its good for her and baby’s health to take those long flights that late in pregnancy. Doctors normally don’t recommend that and I believe Airlines wont allow either.
and now the original posts. I do not believe that you can bring it down to 10k. Even 21k seems like very conservative estimate and always expect the expenses to top that by good 5k-10k.
I cannot leave her in Pakistan, as no one in our families to take care her. I will take her with me. I will not apply for insurance. I will try to find some hospital with minimum quote. I asked HR and they said, my present insurance will cover $5K maximum.
I am in Saudi, I have two options whether baby delivery in Saudi or USA for which I am also considering above option." Pakistan is not an option at all. As no one from family is suitable due to so many reason.
no one can give you a quote because no one knows what the services would be. a normal delivery costs can be estimated but you know that anything can go wrong and the emergency costs can easily skyrocket.
don’t take a chance. why can’t you postpone your visit. i’m sure your employer will understand and cooperate with you.
btw, are you trying to have the delivery of your child in the US so your child could have a US citizenship? i am just curious because i know quite a few people who have done it for this purpose.
I would say come prepared for the expensive option that is csection that can be at least 40-45k. I was shocked to see the bills that I received from the hospital after giving birth.. even tylenol was like $10!
No one will deny medical care to your pregnant wife and you can schedule an installment plan for the hospital expenses once you receive the bill. We will be paying hospital bill for our daughter for first 3 years of her life and that is with insurance and regular pregnancy but csection!!!the cost of recovery room where they keep you for 2 hours after surgery was like $8000.00.. just to give you an idea!
After Obamacare, no insurance can deny a person based upon a pre existing condition, butI don’t know if a non citizen or permanent resident can buy insurance like that anyway.
