he hasn’t pooped in 2 days. he’s 5.5 months old. i gave him warm water with gripe water mixed in followed by warm milk. usually this means he poops within 10 minutes of finishing up, but nothing today. when should i start to get worried? what can i do?
Re: baby constipation- help!
he has started solids, so this happens at the beginning.
I think unless the baby is uneasy and fussy, you dont need to do anything. Let it come naturally.
Re: baby constipation- help!
My mom gives Bilal honey diluted with water...although many people don't like to give honey to babies.
He is 9 1/2 months.
Re: baby constipation- help!
he might is starting teething sometimes it happens due to teething as long as baby is fne not 2 worry if he l b constipated he l becme fussy n irritated
Re: baby constipation- help!
Rice cereal. I didn't give aariz any cuz it would constipated him...banana too... And if u are giving them both, god help the child.
Prune juice him... 1 oz prune juice mixes in 1 oz water.
Drs usually say its ok to let them go a week without poop... Dumbasses I say... By the time the kid poops, it hurts bad and it's always with the help of a laxative... So start giving him the prune juice now...or if u want...he can eat the prune pure by gerber, hipp or any other baby jar brand.
Warm water with honey diluted like reha said also helps...
Also warm bath, and tummy massage.
Re: baby constipation- help!
Banana is not really an issue for us but you have to be careful with rice, so thats why we have not started it yet, even though she liked the taste of khichiri.
you can try soonf water too.
Re: baby constipation- help!
Prune Juice is going to help him. I promise you. A little bit with some water.
Re: baby constipation- help!
My son got a little constipated too when we first gave him solids....I think he went without for 3 days. We cut out the rice cereal and he was fine....gave him oat instead.
Re: baby constipation- help!
but the thing is, he's probably only had 1/2 tsp of solids in total over the last three days.
he had no rice cereal the first time we tried- kept spitting it out, he had maybe four danas of khichri the second day, hated the banana entirely, and yesterday he had about 1/4 tsp of avocado. he's just not cooperating! lol he's super interested in the plate of food and wants to reach out and touch it, but the minute he sees the spoon, the mouth closes up and he leans away from me so its not been great with the solids so far. any time i manage to get the spoon in his mouth, he spits out everything with the funniest face.
although... day before yesterday, i did try the rice cereal in his bottle... 8 oz of milk plus about 3/4 tbsp rice cereal. it didn't sit well with him entirely- he kept spitting up for a while after but would that be enough to cause constipation? gah! i feel terrible. my poor kidlet :/
i'll try the prune juice today.
should i give the solids a break? i'm afraid i'll create spoon aversion or something if i keep trying.
Re: baby constipation- help!
You can mix the prune juice in with his milk too, as our ped suggested (just strain it first if there are bits in it). Definitely cycle his legs and give him a warm bath. We used to give the prune puree. She LOVED it, but I do think it made her a little more likely to spit up -- just b/c of the way it affected her digestive tract. Pear puree helped too!
Yes, it's the rice cereal and/or bananas. You could switch to oatmeal (which is what we did). But still he will have a little trouble as he is adjusting to new foods.
And yeah, no harm in taking a break for a few days and then starting over. He's little.
Also, SGC, everytime you offer him a new food, offer that same food for four days before switching to a new one. This will give you a way to guage his reactions for each and check for allergies. It also gives him a chance to get used to these new tastes. Remember he isn't going to eat a lot right now. His main source of nutrition is still milk. Right now solids are just for fun and introduction. Also, many sites and docs discourage putting cereal in the bottle. I know our moms' generation did this, so it's not the end of the world, but I think it doesn't help them adjust to the new foods and it just fills them without training them.
Most Western docs will tell you to avoid honey until 1 year b/c of risk of botulism.
Re: baby constipation- help!
I should bookmark this thread for 5 months...so much to learn about our little babies!
Re: baby constipation- help!
SGC, Jr. is prone to constipation as well anytime he eats only our food. I try to give him apple, grapes, pineapple and apple juice to keep the constipation at bay.
When he was younger (sounds odd ) I used to give him grated apple especially when we started out solids, like others said no rice and also the thing that my dad did with him was not to spoon feed him. Dad used to give him food with his hands, sometimes just put a little salan on his finger and give Jr. a lick of that, or mash up rotee, or kaddu, shaljam and give him by hand.
The only solids I gave Jr. were the biscuits you get (I don't remember the name) but they dissolve in milk, I used to feed him that in BM.
And if he is being curious put a little of what you guys are having in a plate in front of him, he might put his fingers in and taste it himself. Dad used to let Jr. make a mess doing things this way.
Re: baby constipation- help!
It is the rice.I think I mentioned it in some other thread of yours too that rice cereal caused the same issue with my daughter. Her doc suggested to stop solids for a few days and then start oatmeal cereal. We did that and reintroduced rice later. It never caused issues after that.
Like others said prune juice and pear juice also helps.
Another thing, try to give one new thing at a time and give a gap of few weeks in between. This way what ever issues he might develop you will be able to figure out the causative agent.Like Sahar, said too,it will also help him develop a taste and not dislike too many things all at the same time.
It is a lil tricky, but they get the hang of the spoon easily.Regarding the cereal in the bottle, they say they need to be taught spoon feeding at this age so it is better not to put them in the bottle.I never did that when I started mine with solids.Although I started doing it around the time she was 1 year old,and at that time the reason was to feed her enough before bedtime and eliminate her night time feeds. It worked well at that time. Now I am tapering off her cereal at night so I can take her off the bottle soon,iA.
Hope your lil one feels better soon...:)
Re: baby constipation- help!
Prune juice. You can get a Gerber baby food bottle of it too and feed him a few spoons of mashed up prunes.
Re: baby constipation- help!
he poo'd! yay!
regardiing the suggestions of feeding him, if he's closing his mouth at the sight of the spoon and spits out whatever does go in there, does that go away on its own? i mean, i can't give him anything at this point because he's just not opening up.
Re: baby constipation- help!
^^ Yes your baby will let you know when he is full. Don't force him to eat. He will throw up. I speak from experience. My son would turn away from food, close his mouth when he is full.
Also, you mentioned your baby not doing too well with 8oz milk with rice cereal. That's a bit too much of milk with rice cereal. Try 4-5oz first and see if he is full, give him another oz. Rice cereal makes the milk very heavy so the whole 8oz can be a lot for a small baby that age.
If your baby is constipated, try not to give apple juice, grape juice or other juices with lots of sugar. Cut back on bananas. Give as much prune juice as you can, but dilate it with water. I give my son the adult kind with water, it works each time.
I always keep suppositories for babies for emergency, grip water and prune juice.
Re: baby constipation- help!
isn’t it funny how bowel movements can make us so happy.
SGC - I would really suggest not putting the cereal in his milk - the point right now is to get him used to eating and the cereal in the milk can be really heavy.
As for the mouth closing - what kind of spoon are you using ? I found my son like the ones with a softer tip as opposed to the harder plastic ones…give him the spoon and watch him as he plays with it, he’ll put it in his mouth and get used to it as well. Some babies just need a little bit more time to get used to it.
Oh and like Spiral said don’t force it, I once did right before we were going to a wedding and picked him up wearing my pretty sari and he made the weirdest face and bahhh all over me ![]()
Re: baby constipation- help!
^ its so true! haha
i only tried the rice cereal in bottle thing once and i’m definitely not doing it again as per all of your awesome suggestions. i’ll also try oatmeal next. i’ve decided i’ll give him a bit of a break from food and then next time, just strip him down to diaper and bib and let him have at the plate, which he’s way more interested in anyway. if he gets some on his fingers and tastes it that way, so be it.
ramsha, i’m using this spoon- http://www.ecobabyproducts.com/store/boonbenders.html?gclid=CMaKx7GP1qwCFYmK4Aodiye_xQ
its small and has soft plastic.
i’m hoping that as he gets older, he’ll show more interest in actually opening his mouth to allow the spoon in rather than refusing outright. i just thought he was SO ready because he’s always watching us so intently as we eat and he’s reaching for plates and cups while we’re using them. i guess the whole eating food himself thing isn’t quite figured out yet lol.
Re: baby constipation- help!
Madam was great with spoons for a while and then hated them for MONTHS and only recently allows us to feed her with a spoon (or tries herself). If after your break he still refuses the spoon, maybe try giving him a taste from your finger tips?
Re: baby constipation- help!
^ i've tried that and he's not into that either apparently. its easier to get the food in his mouth with a finger though, so maybe i'll keep trying that way.
