Babies Head shape

Hi guys

My babies head is slightly flat from one side. The problem is that he keeps his head on one side mainly. My mum talks about giving him a little pillow made of rice to shape his head, but I believe that once he starts rolling his head, it will just naturally get shaped.

What do oyu guys think? What do you guys do or did with your baby/ did you shape their heads?

At what point do their heads stop ‘shaping’ if that makes sense? i.e. 3 months, 6 months etc?

Re: Babies Head shape

Don't do anything, just try to make him sleep on his back, not on his belly or side.

Re: Babies Head shape

Thanks for your advise Hareem. I do make him sleep on his back but puts his on one side. I have tried to change his side but he just changes it back to his left side.

Re: Babies Head shape

^Well, I wouldn't suggest to keep a cushion or pillow on his left side coz it can be dangerous for small babies so whenever you see him on his side just turn him on his back without disturbing his sleep, or try to keep his head on right side for the same amount of time he keeps it on left.

Re: Babies Head shape

Hey Shaazy,
My little one is almost 2 months & we've had the same issue with him, since birth he has kept his head on the left side & we didn't think much of it
or i probably didn't notice it much, but recently i noticed the left side was flatter than the right and it looked uneven.
I spoke to the health visitor n DR they told me not to worry as it evens out the bigger they get.
But i tell you whats helping so far.. I'm keeping a very close eye on which side he keeps his head everytime he turns to the left i move it right back to the right or keep it straight
at night i fold a thick blanket n put it under my little ones left side near the head n ears to prevent him from turning that side.
& Mashallah it has improved quiet a lot!.. Also i try and put him in his swing so he's not laying too much during the day and i suggest give your little one some tummy time too.

Re: Babies Head shape

^did you tell the health visitor about keping the blanket on your baby's left side?

Re: Babies Head shape

Nope i haven't, but i don't see how that'd be a problem?

Re: Babies Head shape

^they don't let you keep any cushion, sheets or blankets around the baby in cot because they say it can cause suffocation.

Re: Babies Head shape

shaazy I had same issue with my daughter's head shape till she started sitting on her own. Your baby's head shape will be fine Insha Allah don't worry just wait till she starts sitting on her own and you will see a change in your baby's head shape within days.

Re: Babies Head shape

Yeah that's true, they don't really suggest cushions & things. But I Co-sleep with my baby which they don't really advise either due to SIDs etc.
But I constantly keep an eye on him.

Re: Babies Head shape

You should listen to your mother.

I’m sure you can find readymade pillows for this purpose (filled with regular cotton).

Re: Babies Head shape

Star786, where do you get these pillows from? Do you think I could get this in the US?

Re: Babies Head shape

Them pillows look cute! Much better than them funny looking ones you get from Pakistan lol!

Re: Babies Head shape

My newborn keeps his head on one side too. I don't change it's side fearing he would wake up specially when it happens at night. :(

Re: Babies Head shape

My son's head was also flat on one side when he was born. I used head shaping pillows, one of them helped I think..I'll post the name tomorrow. But what helped most is tummy time I have been giving him 2-3 times daily. It issupposed to help prevent neck muscles from thinning on one side!

Re: Babies Head shape

My baby hates tummy time. His pediatrician suggested having tummy time 3-4 times a day since the first week of his life. I havn't done it at all since he starts to cry. :(

Re: Babies Head shape

Hi VitalSigns101

Try looking in Toys R Us / Babies R Us or Walmart.
If you can't find it you can always buy one of those U shaped travel pillows.

Re: Babies Head shape

Star786, I have a couple of travel pillows at home. I'll try it out and see if my baby likes it. Thanks !

Re: Babies Head shape

He’s a month old, right? He’s going to cry due to frustration…put him down for a few minutes couple of times a day, it will take sometime but it will eventually help!

BTW, this is the pillow I was talking about:

Re: Babies Head shape

My baby is almost 8 months old now & I have been complimented by many people for her supposedly perfect round head & I did not use any pillows or blankets what so ever to shape her head. I did however do one thing from the start & that was whenever I would hold her in my arms I always used to hold her head in my hand rather than letting her head rest on my arms. My hand did started hurting sometimes but I think this holding with my hand made a huge difference. Try that. Hopefully you'll see a huge difference.
