But for niqabi women its the toughest, you start with Baji then go to bhabi then on to aunty/khala then on to nani jaan... when they start getting angry, you stop... go back one step
waise agar aap ko sirf uncle ji / baba ji main select karna paRe, aur raaste main ek suited booted aged person aur ek ba-resh tasbeeh pakRe aadmi ja raha ho to, aap donon ko kaise pukaren ge?
I just go with “sir” , actually its not the men who are an issue, its the ladies
More then a few times now I got caught on the wrong end , when I called a visibly senior citizen “aunty” and she just went bazooka on me ! in attitude I mean
Ok , having said that , I am a woman too , so have a funny incident to share .. my cousin and his wife were visiting me. The were driven to my house by an uncle who was in his 60’s. He kept addressing me as “baaji” .
Initially I got confused , coz to me baaji meant anyone older then the person himself ! I took it pretty weirdly until I spoke to my mother and shared with her. She clarified in Pakistani culture , most men just address ladies as baaji , irrespective of their age , its more to do with a respect thing then the age thing
Baaji is not for young people, but these dukaan walas at areas like Jama Cloth in Karachi and probably Anarkali at Lahore, had this habit of calling all ladies Baaji.
On other hand, many of our lady colleague (who traveled in public transport during college days), had an experience of being called ‘Khala’ by Pathan conductors.
