english word for for it is "Engagement". it's just a cultural thing and nothing to do with one's religion. uually7, a ring is exchanged by the groom and the bride. guests are invited to mark the event with food and "drinks" served. drinks = rooH afzaa :D

Baat pakki is engagement
Depends on your's family and your in-laws, some people give money/garlands, some do exchange rings or do moo meetha.
Some people give bride dress/jewellery to wear on that day while others don't :)
