B.S. in biology

Anyone know any good jobs for people with a B.S. in biology?

Re: B.S. in biology

first it depends where you got your bio degree from? then what was your other major?

any thing connected to life sciences is very competitive, especially in Canada.
in Canada, you have to first build-up your experience through volunteer work (which is even more competitive)
my friends work in hospitals (some are paid and still in their undergrade, n some are biotechnology student and still they are volunteering).

but working in hospitals requires flexibilty in timings too. so if you cant work at night, then best option is to work in some pharmacy, or receptionist is the least.

but if u have some graphic designing background then contact book publishers, to work as an illustrator for science books.

or may be someone else may give you better tips and directions. :)
but dont worry, just show enthusiasm of learning new things. :roman

Re: B.S. in biology

you could go into research or teaching

Re: B.S. in biology

in order to go into pharmacy doesn't a person need to have a four year degree in Pharmacy? I don't think she can just start a pharmacy career without the proper qualifications

Re: B.S. in biology

^ oh know i am not asking her to get a job as pharmacist (as she cant get one, since she aint one :cb:). i am asking her to work in pharmacy store kinda place in order to get experience.

Re: B.S. in biology

Straight out of an undergraduate program, the best bet would be to explore laboratory technicians and research assistant type jobs with pharma tools and solutions providers such as MDS Sciex. I think this would be one of the most relevant job fit for anyone with a biology degree. That being said, there are other jobs in technical sales and service with pharmaceutical firms which might be of interest as well.

If someone wants to go beyond these entry level jobs though, then advanced training is almost certainly going to be required. You can look at this in two ways: short-term training vs. long term…

In terms of short-term training, one could go to teachers college and start a career in teaching science etc. Another short term option which is extremely popular these days is getting trained in forensic science and entomology. Thanks to CSI (never watched that show myself), this profession has come under interesting light and vocational institutions provide 1 to 2 years training in related programs.

Long term training would involve a Masters degree or a Ph.D. A Masters in itself should be sufficient for jobs in Applied Research and Product Development. A Ph.D. is a whole new ball game though – with opportunities in academia, industrial research as well as independent research.

Lastly of course, you have the traditional careers in medicine, pharmacy and public health which have their own requirements.

Jobs that you can do with a BS in biology

Research technician ( You will need to to grad school to progress)

Pharmaceutical sales

Clinical research coordinator and subsequently associate

Teaching

If you're interested in research then look for an internship with a biotech company or research institute in your area. You can also try hospital lab's, but speaking from experience in research - you need to have some sort of internship experience first. If you are in the last year of undergrad then ask your university career center or bio department to help you find a suitable internship. by the way, where are you located - East Coast - US???
