*-* B R E A S T C A N C E R *-*

AoA All,

I work in Radiation Oncology (i’m not a doctor), and breast cancer would have to be one of the most common type of cancer in women (yes, men can get it too)… this goes both for Australia & Pakistan… so i thought i’d spread some awareness with you guys…

The thing is; if caught early, breast cancer can be a relatively easy cancer to treat; early diagnosis is the key, here are some tips in line with that:

  • if you are over 40, go and get a Mammogram (xray of breasts) done ASAP, and get one done every couple of years post that (ask the doctor whats best). Note: it takes 7 YEARS for a potential cancer to grow from a microscopic disease to a lump of diameter 1 cm… so u can imagine that there is no chance in accidently observing it before then… this is where mammograms are very effective! they can pick up very tiny diseases.

  • examine your breasts both visually and by physical examination. Do this every 2-3 months. Notice if there are any moulds that are changing shape/ size/ texture/ colour at a relatievely fast rate. Also, feel for lumps around the breast area. If, God forbid, you feel something odd, then try and “feel” for the same thing on the other breast (cancers dont grow symmetrically :)). And, no you dont have to be over 40 to take on this particular precaution… Iv’e seen 30 year olds with cancer as well :frowning:

  • DO NOT go to a homopathic doctor (cancer cells cant be killed with herbs!)

Remember, most of the lumps felt in the breast are NON-CANCEROUS (i.e a sist or something else), so no need to freak out! however, it is better to be on the safe side and get it checked out with a doctor… and there can be no excuses for sharam-haya as there are many female doctors out there.

Allah na kare, if someone is found to have breast cancer, then plz dont take it lightly/ give other things priority over it (i know this sounds obvious, but apparently to some ppl its not!). Get it treated ASAP. If it is confined within the breasts, then treatment is relatively easy, however, our lymphatic system drains out of the breasts and guess where it goes to… the head, neck and lungs. I am not trying to freak ppl out here, just awareness so that these matters aren’t taken lightly.

Here are two contrary examples; I’ll start with the bad.

BAD: a lady developed breast cancer, didn’t do anything about it bcoz of the sharam issue, then when things got bad, she started homopathy!!!, things got worse, and someone finally got her to go to a radiation oncologists. The doctor prescribed immediate surgery, followed by radiation therapy. Well she did all that, and half way through the radiation therapy, she felt better so left it!!! (the reasons why u r meant to get radiation therapy is so that any microscopic disease that may have been left behind from the surgery is taken care of). Khair, the cancer reoccurred, but by now, it was beyond hope… her breast LITERALLY swell to a size of a small watermellon, started growing fungus on it, had blood peeping out, and somehow, started developed a colony of worms on it, Astaghfiruallah!!!

GOOD: She developed a small lump, found it was cancer, had it sugucally removed, followed by some chemotherapy… and Alhumdilillah the cancer is GONE, and she is leading a healthy, normal life.

Again, i dont mean to scare anyone, i just want my sisters here to be aware of disease which is diagnosed early, can be treated successfully inshallah.

May Allah protect us from such bemarrian, Amin.

Wassalam

Many thanks for the advice note pinks - as October is d month of raising awareness of breast cancer, its nice to do ur bit and spread d word on this forum... keep up d good work x

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

i've heard mammograms and paps (to check for ovarian cancer) are necessary once a year, once a women turns 25? is this true?
i've been getting them for a couple of years now... they're a bit uncomfortable, but i make sure to get mine in! better to be safe than sorry, i say.

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

thnks for sharing zis :)

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

I go for my pap every year-it's good to have one done when ur 25 but if ur married and younger than 25-get it done every year any way. It's covered by ur insurance so why not!!
I am 28 and have not gotten a mamogram yet-
Hopkins are doing them everywhere for free this month-I may drop by for one!!

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

Thanks for information pinks.

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

It's really sad and pathetic that ppl will not even take care of their health just b/c of "sharam" issues.

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

it is, but a lot of that stems from lack of information and education about the consequences. i was reading an article on the bbc about how women in rural pakistan are being shamed into not getting treated for breast cancer, and mullahs are actually preaching that it is God's punishment for sinful women, so they're even more deterred from seeking help. and once they do, they're shunned and mistreated. its ridiculous! if more women were more empowered in pakistan, i swear it would be such a different country and probably more progressive.
dammit, i can't find the article... i'm going to keep looking and post on here when i do.

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

Thanks for the reminder. :)

I've seen a similar case so yes, this does happen. Ladies, please make it a priority and get a pap smear plus a mamogram done. Why risk it..

This is very common in pakistan..not only for breast cancer but for inguinal hernias (males) as well. I remember this guy who'd been carrying around a hernia the length of his arm and came only when the intestines inside had twisted severly enuf to cause pain.

It's not only the shame but lack of awareness as well. If they are aware of the circumstances, the downhill results, they are more likely to go out, get tested adn treated.

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

Paps become even more important once a women has been married.

But as far as mammograms go, I havn't come across the need to do them once u hit 25... plz check this with your doctor (preferably one who is an expert in the field)

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

About the ladies in paki (especially in villages), well there are a couple of issues i think: 1. Sharam, 2. ignorance and 3. FINANCE.... mammograms aren't free in paki... i forced a relative into getting it done once in pakistan and I think it costed about Rs. 1500 (but thats coz it was a good hospital).

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

well in pakistan the doctors are also at fault ,nobody told me abt PAPS when i was there ,canada aa kai pata chala how important it is:smack:

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

LOL at homepathic daactars in Pakistan giving out herbal medications to kill cancer cells. Ignorant health care practitioners for an equally ignorant awaam.

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

medical is not free in pak nor is education or any other facility. a common person can barely make enough to feed his family. how can he afford to have such expensive tests and check ups? awareness is important but to have the means to follow up on it is just as important. its easy to sit and preach to the poor but in the end all they have to think about is how they’d get their roti for afternoon and evening.

we pakistanis have become a nation who likes to ridicule others without realizing that they are not as much fortunate as we are. but then who cares? just go, preach and get done with your responsibility. Allah Allah Khair Sallah. :halo:

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

In the United States, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death. Lung cancer is the leading cancer death in women.

Each year more than 43,000 women die of breast cancer in the US.

At age 40 you should get a mammogram and clinical breast exam (done by physician) done every year.

If you are high-risk due to genetics, family history then you should get MRI and mammogram done every year from age 30.

Self-breast exams should be started from your 20's onward. And from 20's to 30's you should get a clinical breast exam (done by a physician) every 3 years.

Pap smears are to check for cervical cancer. The age to start them is 18. Especially those that are
"active".

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

you can do self-exams to check for lumps… its not about preaching to the poor, its about bringing awareness and education and maybe for health matters such as these, there needs to be free education available. unfortunately, this is a nation-wide problem and it concerns the government. i don’t see much being done about this either
as for roti, won’t do you much good if you’re seriously sick or dying or dead- for you or your family. healthcare should be a priority.

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

yes, u can do he examination yourself, but if u do happen to find something, Allah na kare! a simple check up at the doctor will cost Rs50-100, and treatment runs into thousands... its not enuf to diagnose, u need the money for the treatment as well :(

i guess thats where ppl like us come in (who have way more resources then most pakis), we shud give charity to organisations like shaukat khanum who give free treatments, but theres only so many they can treat due to limited resources...

Re: - B R E A S T C A N C E R -

very true!
