I read somewhere that if you face a difficult situation and you see yourself getting closer to Allah swt its azmaish if you instead are getting away from Allah swt its azaab.

This is also what I’ve heard.

As for the other part of the question, what type of sin deserves any kind of punishment, well that is something that only Allah knows.
