Azad Khan Afghan (Āzād Khan Afḡān; Pashto: آزاد خان افغان‎) (died 1781) was a Pashtun military commander and a major contender for supremacy in western Iran after the death of Nader Shah in 1747.
Azad Khan Afghan was the son of Suleiman Khan from Andar, Ghazni, who became the Shah of Iran after death of Nadir Afshar. Following the murder of Nadir Afshar in 1747, there were two Afghan cavalry brigades commanded by two Afghan generals In Persia (Iran). One was Ahmad Khan Abdali who returned to Kandahar and established the Durrani Empire; the other general, a much senior and more powerful, was Azad Khan Afghan with 12,000 Afghan Ghilzai (Ghilji) Pashtuns stationed in Azerbaijan.

Rise to power

Azad Khan was determined to reestablish the Hotaki dynasty in Iran. First he secured his position in Azerbaijan and made the citadel of Uremia his base. He conquered Kerman and the surrounding areas north-east of Iran. The Georgian king, Taymoraz, and his son, Heraclios (Erakli) invaded Azerbaijan but Azad Khan defeated them and conquered Georgia (Gurjistan) and married the daughter of the Georgian king. Then, Azad Khan focused towards the south and decided to return to Afghanistan. Dr. Gandasingh, an Indian historian in his book of Ahmad Khan Durrani writes: “Azad Khan had a much greater plan. He wanted to unite Iran, Afghanistan, and Hindustan under one rule and create a vast Empire.” In 1750, Azad Khan defeated his rivals, Karim Khan Zand, and Hasan Khan Qajar and conquered Isfahan, the Capital of the Safavid Empire. He sat on the throne of the Safavid Empire and proclaimed himself as the king of Persia in 1751.

Professor John Perry in his book, “Karim Khan Zand” writes: “The Durrani king (Ahmad Shah Durrani) while in Niashapur sent friendly letters to Karim Khan Zand promising army and wealth if Karim can prevent Azad Khan from coming towards the east, Afghanistan.” According to Prof. John Perry, the two, Ahmad Khan Durrani and Karim Khan Zand made a treaty to divide the Persian Empire among themselves, keeping Azad Khan in the north and Khursan as the buffer zone. But Azad Khan, although 17 years older than Ahmad Shah Durrani and a much senior leader, never wanted to face Ahmad Khan Abdali and fight another Afghan army.

Events and disturbances in the north once again brought Azad Khan to Azerbaijan, but this time his fate took him towards Kurdistan, Iraq, and the Persian Gulf. His last days were with the Georgian king as a guest until his rival, Karim Khan Zand invited him to come to Iran and join his rule of Iran. Azad Khan accepted the invitation and spent his last days in Shiraz until he died in peace in 1781 A.D. and was buried there.

Awesome post :)

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Not against this topic, but why never in history forum, we discuss about, people like Henry ford or Edison
or generals like Patton, Montgomery and Rommel. About armies like Whermacht.

Our history discussion starts from India and ends somewhere in middle east

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Because a lot about famous western people is already broadly known. There's not much new to share.

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Who is stopping you from posting stuff about edison and henry ford?.....
my interest in the histories of distant places depend upon depend upon the current affairs of the worlds.....e.g crimea is in the news nowadays, i googled about its tatar population and their history and i found out that tatar khanate of crimea was once nightmare for russians and other areas of europe....i have become interested in their history due to ongoing crisis.

between are you not that indian troll who was saying that for kashmiris pashtun tribemen were like invaders from kazakistan?

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Or may be we haven't looked beyond of what we think we know

troll, is someting people here never accused me of :) (I will use that as my signature now :D)
Kashmir, the hell, is my official sasural, but since Pandits are forbidden in the valley, I go for very short time in the valley every year. You can ask any old resident Kashmiri there. But regert for derailing your thread, apologies

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

So you are a kashmiri hindu......it make sense why you have grudge against pakhtuns, we were very harsh on hindu population of kashmir in 1700-1800s, 1947 and 1990s.........i have plenty of kashmiri friends, muslim ones, they have good things to say about pakhtuns and are thankful for our role against your hindu dogra rule....i advise you to spread shytty stories against pakhtuns on your own indian forum.....

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Come to think of it, this thread should be in World History forum, not Indo-Pak history

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Ustad, the stories that I told you were from muslim natives of Kashmir, Pandits don't live there anymore, and Pathans have never been my concern, they didn't uproot us, it was our own Kashmiri Muslims. kashmiris muslims don't like dogra rule, just like Pandits don't like Pakhtun rule, infact, the way pakhtun rule now in their terrotories, I have doubt on their capability as rulers anyway :)

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Pathan is not a way to rule it is a way to live. :)

I am fond of my Pathan cousins... but I also love and respect my Rajput and Sikh cousins... because actually none of us are natives to the region... we all from the Steppes. :D

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

^^^ My gotram is Gandhar, allegedly people of Kandhar, my saas calls me Afghanistan ke junglee :D, Only jats are supposed to be from Steppe, not other sikhs

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Then I guess all my friends are Jatts, which explains an awful lot. :D
I think Ghandhara ould probably encompass more Northern areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Although it's perfectly possible they could have once extended beyond those domains. I know that by 4th Century AD it all changed drastically though. :D

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

Afghanistan is right place to leave, it looks as much as useless like Kashmir. I wrote it before, an write again, I relinquish my right to Kashmir, if they promise to take Nehru-Gandhi dynasty with them, with their cousins like Sharifs across border, then Taliban won't be needed to destroy Pakistan and Uncle Sam, need not to worry :D

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

I'm guessing you've never been to either places you describe as Useles... Trust me I've drifted in some right damn wierd places but not come across anywhere "Useless" yet... unless you count the various political establishments I have had to attend... those places are riddiculous... I sit and sit for ages.... If you dont know me, I cant keep still for like 5 minutes... and at the end of the day they still dont decide something... sheesh... if it was a pind gathering we'd thrash some answers and resolutions out of em :D

Re: Azad khan Sulieman khel, the ruler of Azerbaijan, kurdistan and westren persia

I go to kashmir every year, to baramulla, where I stay for less than hour, you know pandit can get killed soon unless they are not protected by millitary, by some freedom fighter. Afganistan is not the place where I ever imagine to be. so places become useless to me, and they don't look like place to be.
