When your MIL asks “Kia haal hai?” and you say theek thaak hun, aur aap?..and she says “main bhi theek thaak alhamdolillah…acha… aur, kia haal hai???” and you say, bus, theek thaak polite laugh… and she says “heheh.. aurr…kia haal hai beta?”
she just wants to communicate so tell her something that happened at work or a recipie u tried out so she sees ur trying. then if she aint nadz’s mil she should appeciate the effort.
talk about lawn prints mania starts from feb to sept
If she goes on and on about asking your haal chaal, then she definitely likes talking to you.
You can ask about her tabiat in detail (did you go to the doctor? did he change your medicine? do you take them regularly?), talk about food (ask her recipes, tell her what you have been cooking, ask her what she's cooked lately), weather (tell/ask her how it is, do you like it or not, what do the news reports say about it changing), ask her about people around her (other people in your inlaws..how they are doing and stuff), if she has grandchildren talk about them (grandparents love that!), tell her to take care of herself and ask her when she can visit you. There is so much to talk about. You should just know how to!

Honestly, there is an art to having a conversation. Make sure to ask open-ended questions that require more than a yes or no answer and then you share some mundane detail about your day/week/routine and just embelish the telling of the story. This way, you've shared something about what you've done and also asked after them.
