A Fine Balance was one of the worst books I have ever read in my life. It made me want to kill myself, that is how utterly depressing the book was. I was so happy when the book was over, but of course, it ended in the most depressing way .... even more depressing than the contents of the book itself.
Twentieth Wife is a great book, the sequel Feast of Roses leaves something to be desired...
great books that Ive recently read or am reading...
1) Maps for Lost Lovers - Nadeem Aslam (someone described this book as the book that has been written in the style of the great poets Ghalib and like - i think it was an accurate description.
2) 1421: the year China Discovered the world - Gavin Menzies (very interesting
I read Maps for Lost Lovers recently and it is an amazing book, indeed. I feel its also a running commentary or rather a critique on our culture, brilliantly depicting the dimemma faced by the Pakistani community residing in Europe...religious bigotry and cultural malpractices reflective of their claustrophobic thinking/mindset; their own identity being a Muslim and a Pakistani clashing with the liberal values espoused by the Western societies.
There are times when one feels the writer is committing blasphemy through his characters but then such questions are raised about religion, culture and society everywhere, whether we like them or not.
(there is however so much abt the insects and plants that it seems as if its written by an entomologist or a botanist. But I still liked it for the writer's wierd yet interesting choice of analogies and linkages he draws with issues and events back home).
–thanks MQ, you made life easier for me. I thought I had missed out something very important. I wish to read Season for Rainbirds by Nadeem Aslam.
–gonna buy Battle for God by Karen Armstrong and reread it.
I have been reading a lot lately, particularly the Indian writers, the new as well as the old crop and then the rest are all in one way or the other about politics and am just too lazy to write abt 'em.
