Risk warning over herbal medicine

Potentially dangerous herbal medicines could be on sale in Britain, the drugs regulator says.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency warned consumers not to buy a range of unlicensed products it suspects has reached the UK market.

The medicines - which claim to treat a range of problems from skin disease to indigestion - were found on sale in Canada containing heavy metals.

The MHRA warned they could cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Officials from the regulator are surveying retailers to see if they are on sale.

Roy Alder, a director at the MHRA, said: "Medicinal products containing high levels of heavy metals pose a serious public health risk.

"Many of the products we suspect to have entered the UK may contain mercury, arsenic and lead.

Damage

“These metals can cause severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Other serious problems such as kidney damage, convulsions and coma have also been reported.”

Individuals who believe they may have taken any of the products should discontinue use and consult their pharmacist or doctor.

These are the products, and their manufacturers, that the MHRA is warning consumers not to take:

Karela tablets (Shriji Herbal Products, India)

Karela capsules (Himalaya Drug Co, India, and Charantia, UK)

Yograj Guggul tablets (Zandu Pharmaceuticals, India)

Sudarshan tablets (Zandu Pharmaceuticals, India)

Shilajit capsules (Dabur India Ltd, India)

SAFI Liquid (Hamdard-WAKF-Pakistan and Hamdard-WAKF-India)

Maha Sudarshan Churna Powder (Zandu Pharmaceuticals, India, D&K Pharmacy, Chhatrishha, Dabur India Ltd - all India)

I'm very particular about what I take and I have never taken any diet pills, whether they're herbal or not - they all have severe side effects - why are they not off the shelves? You find all kinds of harmful stuff on the market.

I really believe they are trying to clamp down on south asian herbal medicines.

I'm 3/4 way through with my bottle of Safi ...

Health Canada is asking for people to report any store that is carrying it. I assume to take the bottles off the shelves.

well today I had diarohea, so I decided not to take the Safi.

Are all those millions of people in Pakistan taking safi going to die of mercury and arsenic poisoning? Zalim-wadera consued 8 bottles in a row!!

You rarely can tell when mercury or arsenic poisoning kill a person, without an autopsy. Heavy metal poisoning manifests itself in many ways, most of which end of being mistakingly attributed to other medical conditions because the extent of poisoning is not known.

Mercury, for instance, interferes with brain function and can make a person act eccentric or weird. In the long run it could even kill you, though it could just appear like you died of natural causes such as illness.

Unless there is reason to suspect foul play, most times an autopsy will not even be done.

In places like Pakistan, it is even less likely that an autopsy will be performed.

I was hooked on SAFI a while back, every morning I would mix a tablespoon of it in a glass of water and drink the solution, it was instantly refreshing.

We also had this iron drink (folaad) to mix in milk but I poured it away, it was an import from Pakistan.

And we have this bitter powder (some sort of crushed roots/leaves/bark?) for headaches and spots and what have you from eating too many sweet things, looks suspicious to me.

once the doctor told me to haVE safi as there was some kind of allergy.... but i did not..... lucky me... it has a yukk taste.

I don’t think its fair to say that Safi has “yukk taste”. It is an absolute insult to the word “yukk”. “Yukk” is when you find hair in your salan. “Yukk” is when the chai does not have sugar in it. “Yukk” is when the roti gets burned too much from one side. Safi is beyond “yukk”. Safi is pure EVIL (Endless Vomit Inducing Liquid). Salute to those who drink it day in and day out on the hopes of getting rid of their acne :salute:

'Blood purification'?

Why not eat 'Gulqand'. I did not know what the thing was until I ate 2 years ago. It is the crushed rose patels. The first time I ate, I almost puked but I now I have developed the taste. It is so tasty to eat. Havent eaten in a long while but it is sweet and clears the blood and skin.

And has it ever been proven, under laboratory conditions, to purify the blood or is it just by hearsay?

^ Well, I have thalessemia minor. I have been advised to take it daily. And I feel much better when I do. I can breath easy. My skin improves and becomes pinkish instead of pale (yellow). Maybe it makes fresh blood?

Thalessemia minor means that your heamoglobin (the iron based compound in blood cells that carries oxygen) doesn't function quite right, though it still works pretty well. basically, your blood cells carry less oxygen than mine. If you're absorbing iron inefficiently your body may be making much less heamoglobin than you need.

That's why you can't breathe easy .. your body is constantly craving more oxygen making you breathe harder. Rose petals contain vitamin C, which maximised the iron absorbtion in your body and thus helps make sure that your body has all the iron it needs (hence maximising your haemoglobin levels, allowing your blood to carry more oxygen and thus making it easier for you to breath).

In short, vitamin C tablets would probably have the same effect. But they wouldn't taste the same.

I have more iron in my blood than normal for a female/male. This is because for years I took iron tablets cz my thalessemia was misunderstood by doctors as being iron deficiency. They thought my anemia was cz of lack of iron when it wasnt. Now the red cells count in my blood is 6.7 whereas the normal range

for a male is : 4.6 - 6.2
for a female is : 4.2 - 5.4

You can imagine how much iron of is in exccess in my blood. But it is of no use cz it is not being properly distributed to different parts of my body.

But seriously, I'm curious as to why someone recommended rose petals to you given that they increase iron absorption.

They increase iron production or absorption? I have enough iron. It only needs to be absorped.. or maybe distributed correctly to the whole body? So, I dont know, maybe they suggested cz I looked pale?

Got it. Vitaman C will help your body absorb that excess iron you have stored in there. Hence the rose petals to boost your vitaman C levels.

I hate taking that vitamin C tablet. You know that effervescent one? It is fun to watch it melt and easier to drink but still when you know that it is a DRUG, it is diffcult to drink :bummer:
