The body of another Shaheed soldier was recovered from Gayari on Sunday bringing the total number of bodies recovered so far to 71According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) here, the identity of the deceased personal was under process.
It may be mentioned here that Gayari incident happened on April 7 this year and 139 soldiers including some civilians of 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion came under a huge snow slide.
Since the incident happened, over 300 soldiers along with 50 Engineering Plants are busy in extreme weather conditions day and night to find the remains of soldiers. All available resources have been employed by the Army to retrieve the bodies of buried soldiers and civilians.
Would they at some point give up and leave the rest of the bodies buried in the ice ?
Would it be okay, morally, ethically, religiously and logically ?
If I am not wrong, Gen Kiyani had said in May in a news conference that every martyred soldier's body would be recovered. So, I think they'll keep searching the remaining bodies.
Though this thread has been unstuck, but just wanted to say that the rescue operation is still on. 4 more shaheeds recovered yesterday, bringing the number up to 89.
I agree with the author. The search operation has been on hold during the frigid winter months. 121 out of the 139 soldier’s bodies have been recovered, and the army is gearing to restart the search operation once weather permits.
I do understand that the families of the remaining soldiers would get closure upon receiving their bodies, and considering the fact that their bodies would be intact because of the low temperatures, it might not be a bad idea. But I feel the army wants to continue the recovery process as much for logistical reasons as for recovering the bodies. There must be plenty of ‘important stuff’ buried down there which they may want to retrieve/destroy before finishing recovery.
