Islamabad: The Pakistan Army has recovered over dozen bodies of its soldiers after hectic efforts in Giari sector of Siachen.**More than 100 soldiers, including a colonel were buried in avalanche at around 6:00 am on Saturday.Heavy equipment sniffers dogs and helicopters were sent to the area to expedite the rescue operation.The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram Range in the Himalaya, just east of the Line of Control between India-Pakistan. A team of doctors and paramedics has also been rushed to the high-altitude region, which suffers extreme weather conditions – temperatures on the strategic Siachen glacier plummet to minus 70 degrees Celsius (minus 94F). ”More than 100 soldiers of NLI (Northern Light Infantry) including a colonel were trapped when the avalanche hit a military camp,” army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told. ”The rescue mission is continuing and rescuers are trying to rescue the soldiers.” Harsh weather and the high altitude claims many more lives than actual fighting over Siachen. A military statement said the avalanche struck early on Saturday morning, raising the possibility that soldiers were asleep at the time. ”Around 100 persons of army came under a snow slide early this morning in Gayari sector near Skardu,” it said. ”Rescue efforts are on. Sniffing dogs, helicopters and troops on ground are employed on rescue efforts.

The news channels here are not showing this in news. All the info i got was from internet. No phones are working. my brother in law is deployed there while his family is staying at gilgit. why are they not releasing the names ?

RIP the brave soldiers who fight the enemy as well as the elements. I think it is an international SOP among armed forces to release information in bits and pieces after such an incident happens.

Considering Pakistan is having trouble getting heavy machinery to the area, I guess the soldiers are as good as, you know, I don’t wanna say it. I think this would be the biggest casualty after the 2005 earthquake where 200 soldiers were lost in kashmir.

this is just really heart breaking … my deepest condolences to the soldiers familes!

I think it is the biggest disaster in the history of Pakistan armed forces during peace time. We cannot include the earthquake casualties here as they were spread across a vast area. My heart goes out to the families. May Allah grant them solace.
