Sherry Rehman , the new minister for Information and Broadcasting, wants to repel the autonomous status of PEMRA and would merge it with the ministry. How would it affect the freedom of media in Pakistan. What do you guys think??
Sherry to make changes in Pemra
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister-designate for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman has decided to bring important changes in Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) after formally assuming the office.
Orders would be issued very soon to send the officers who were appointed on deputation in PEMRA back to their departments.
The minister-designated was given a briefing about PEMRA. Following the PM Yousaf Raza Gillani’s directions the notification of merging PEMRA into Information Ministry will be issued within one or two days.
The autonomous status of PEMRA will be abolished and it will be made a department within the ministry. Changes are expected in other departments of the ministry as well.
I think some kind of checks on the media without actually gagging them is not a bad thing. humaaray logon ko aazadi itni aasani say raas bhi to nahin aati be it generals, politicians, judges or the media

Musharraf provided full freedom to the media in his government(except during 2007). There was no gagging etc. There should not be any choking now.... either. We must know the short comings of this new lot in full... without any restrictions.

Sure, except for the dozens of journalist that 'disappeared' when they wrote against Mush's policies
Apart from GEO offices being shot at
Apart from News stations being shut down.
That is complete media freedom! Thank you dictator!
Was PEMRA really "autonomous"? Wasn't it shutting down channels that hosted Mushy's black-list journalists? What was so autonomous about that?
We do need media freedom (with certain restrictions), by putting PEMRA under a ministry is going to curtail chances of PEMRA getting out of govt stranglehold, IMO.
I have a question. She's saying she wants to merge PEMRA with the ministry, but I thought they wanted PEMRA abolished ?? Merging it with the ministry doesn't abolish the restrictions on the media, right?

Haven't read up on this yet, but I think it would mean that all the functions of PEMRA would be absorbed into the Information Ministry and then PEMRA as a separate body would cease to exist.

Pakistan media has had too much freedom during the past years under the great leadership of President Musharaf. PPP are doing the right thing by putting it under the watchful eye of the ministry of information. The media freedom needs to be checked in Pakistan as the the speaker Fahmida Mirza and Zardari had intimated.

I have not read into this, so here is my quick reply (and could be off the mark). PEMRA is an organization that is being merged into the Ministry. PEMRA Ordinance, which was promulgated to kinda gag the media is to be abolished. So two different things.
