Automobile Engineering

Ok here is another related thread. Automobile Engineering…what is its scope, where are the best programs etc…I have searched a lot…still don’t have an idea.

Your replies would be really appreciated.

Re: Automobile Engineering

Bhai Laeeq Khan Sahib, you should take up studies in Hybrid Car technologies where ever you can find it, as Gasoline becomes more and more expensive, the hybrids will take over and even plug in type electric cars will also be more popular. that in my opinion is the future of automobile technologies....:)

Re: Automobile Engineering

My bro was in automotive engineering, actually his solar race car which his team raced in Japan for the world solar car rally is on display at the museum of science and industry in the UK.

but as he started looking for his masters he felt that autmotive was too limiting and even with focus such as hybrids and what nots if the scope is kept broader i.e. renewable energy in general versus alternative fuel based vehincles his scope would be broader.

he is vacationing out of the country right now, but I will have him post here when he is back.

Re: Automobile Engineering

Thanks Mr. Fraudia and Sindsagar.

Really appreciate your replies.

I agree Fraudia bro... the scope kinda gets limited. Actually its my brother who is interested and i have tried to convince him into general engineering. I 'l make him read this thread, maybe he would be able to make a better decision.

One can at the undergrad level go for plain engineering or something similar and later speciailize in something...

and yes ...museum of science and industry in the UK...and car on display....thats impressive mashaAllah.

Re: Automobile Engineering

Automobile and its dependent industries and trading activies are the 2nd lergest job providers after agriculture in the world.

Re: Automobile Engineering

but not all those jobs have to do with automotive engineering, I would actually hazard a guess that majority of the suppliers to teh automotive companies have more general engineers than automotive engineers working for them. materials engineers, mechanical engineers, electronic engineers etc.

Re: Automobile Engineering

I've been an automotive engineer for 13 years, so I can share a little bit of from my experience

"Automotive Engineering" is a very broad term. There are structural, electrical, manufacturing, mechanical engineers, computer, systems and more.

As much as hybrid/solar and what not sounds cool, basic gasoline engine technology is not going anywhere. GM and Ford have less then 1% of its work force dedicated to alternative fuel technology.

In a new vehicle program, it’s not the engine, but the rest of the car which is new. In fact, only the outside look is new. Basic interior, electronics and what not are carry-over from other car programs.

Anyway, to cut the long story short. Auto is a pretty hot field to be in. I would suggest this

Structural engineering (Design, Analysis, Test are main three branches)
Bio-mechanical (these engineers develop crash test dummies)
Electronics/Electrical (the hottest field is design of entertainment and comfort packages)
Interiors (hottest field is ergonomics engineering)

Re: Automobile Engineering

I am assuming you are talking about undergrad degrees?

In that case, "automobile degree" maynot be considered as a real degree by lot of countries / companies. Just because a program has "degree" designation doesn't mean it will have same recognition as other traditional eng. degrees (civil, mechanical, electrical etc) in the real practical world.

For example, In Canada lot of colleges are also giving Degrees in last couple of years but no big university of Canada recognize them (and allows you to take any Post Degree program because of that). Same with jobs, they are not given same preference as traditional degree with bigger universities.

This phenomenon is even stronger in Asia + Middle eastern jobs. Hence stick with traditional engneering degree, because its more recognized and its more general hence you can get into more fields when you graduate

Re: Automobile Engineering

tariq

its electgrical, mechanical, bio-medical, engineers who have some focus on automotives, I mentioned people who have a degree in automotive engineering because then u are limiting yourself. a mechanical engineer can go anywhere, same for electrical they nmay have focus on specific applications e.g. medical devices or autmobiles or telecm but they can kinda float around.

Re: Automobile Engineering

Another Engineering discipline with a lot of promise is Robotics, which is an Electro-mechanical and Electronic studies, it is taking over factories and even household chores, worth looking into.
