Authentication of Hadiths & its Compliance

:salam2:

I read somewhere that Abu Abdulla (Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal) r.a., said: “when we narrate narration related to our Prophet Muhammad :saw2: like about Halaal (permissible) and Haraam (impermissible), Behest/Decree and Licit/Rightful etc., then authentication and exact references should be checked/provided. However, those narrations which are about actuate and comminatory/intimidator, emphasis and intensification etc., leniency is allowed in providong of exact references in case if it is a weak narrations.”

In other words, compliance on hadith meant. Please share your views. :jazak:

:wsalam:

So it sounds to me like he’s saying when there’s something to establish injunctions, then you need to verify the sources/references, but it’s not as strict when trying to encourage/discourage from good/bad deeds respectively. Or that weak narrations can be used for the latter. But the authentication of hadith is something for the ulema to do, not for a layman.

Re: Authentication of Hadiths & its Compliance

Peace CO,

Yes that is what i meant. However, i think we should check authentication of hadith at our end too rather then just believing and taking it as absolute truth from any ulema.

Back to the hadith, if we try to write a list of something which fall either in first category or second category, where do that falls? I mean like:

“alcohol” is haraam so its fall in first category
“making dua” after each namaaz could be fal in second category.

:hmmm:

Re: Authentication of Hadiths & its Compliance

From my understanding of the quote, I'd guess this saying of his was to other ulema and not the masses. Haram and halal issues would fall under jurisprudence/injunctions category and tidings of rewards/punishments of deeds would come under the latter.

Knowing how to authenticate ahadith involves a science of its own. That is to say knowing which narrations are authentic/reliable requires its own knowledge. Then knowing which hadith to implement practically out of what is concluded to be authentic is another matter. To be able to do this on your own would require a significant amount of dedication. That's why I'm happy with doing taqleed of someone who is well versed in the field rather than to try and re-figure out these things for myself.
