Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

Aren’t they taking it a bit too far, much like the sports science BS

Another example of things getting a bit too ‘professional’

How does writing reports help you as a cricketer?

Following the snub, Watson is now considering his test future

Australia’s tour of India went into crisis mode on Monday with the team management axeing four players, including vice-captain Shane Watson, from the third Test in Mohali for ignoring team orders following the defeat in Hyderabad. The other players are James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja.

One fan's view

Clarke seriously is a very big drama queen. Under his captaincy Australia have lost Katich, Ponting, Hussey and now these 4 guys. I seriously think Ponting and Hussey resigned because they didnt want to be treated like doormats by Clarke. Part of a quality of being a good captain is to deal with difficult individuals not to let your ego, insecurities get in the way. This is going to hurt the Aussie side tremendously.

[TABLE="width: 100%"]

"I'm surprised that's the penalty for something so mundane. It seems like it was on a schoolboy tour or something. It's an over the top reaction."
Former Australia captain Allan Border

"I'm stunned. I've never heard of this sort of thing before at top level in any sport. When you are losing there are niggling things there but they're grown men, it's not school boy stuff. It's not under-6s, this is Test cricket… there would have been a better way."
Former Australia batsman Mark Waugh

"From my experience report writing is not a player's strength, no surprise to hear some failing, need to focus more on field short comings?"
Former Australia allrounder Tom Moody

"As I have always said the coach should not be a selector. He should communicate well with the players and help them prepare, that's it! Regarding the issue of four players being unavailable for Aust selection due to not delivering homework or a report to the coach, the answer is simple: the captain runs the team and in conjunction with the selectors picks the team. The captain should always have final say. Ridiculous what's happening."
Former Australia spinner Shane Warne

"Adults we are, not schoolboys! Please let's act properly and make good decisions in India! Need these boys playing."
Former Australia batsman Darren Lehmann

"To many wrong people are picked for jobs who give a fancy presentation!!"
Former Australia batsman Damien Martyn

"What is going on with Aussie Cricket?? Didn't realise you had to do an essay to get a selection these days..!!!!!"
Former England captain Michael Vaughan

"Implications from these actions are serious.. I feel it is deeper than it appears. Aust are in trouble!!"
Former Australia batsman Dean Jones

"Disappointed in the news of the players being sent home. Lead up to the Ashes is struggling. Need to get back on top #ausvind #breakingpoint"
Former Australia wicketkeeper Ian Healy

"Financially cricket is great these days, but I'm glad I played when it was enjoyable and cricket was all that mattered - wickets and runs."
Former England fast bowler Darren Gough

Lol, getting dropped for failing to prepare a powerpoint presentation

So ridiculous. Did coaches like Arthur and Hesson go to the Ijaz Butt School of Management or something?

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

I knooowww…I heard it..and my first reaction was, “What are they in school or something?”.

So stupid…didn’t expect it from the Aussies!!! :smack:

Poor little boys got punished for not doing their homework :cb:

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

if these players' parents send apology notes to management, will they be pardoned?

speaking of getting too professional pata nahin mujhe Munnabhai M.B.B.S. ka yeh dialogue kyon yaad aa gaya:

Sanjay Dutt:* woh bahar casualty mein koi marne ki haalat mein raha tau usko form bharna zaroori hai kya!!!*

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

Aussie Cricket is going through a huge crisis at the moment, both on and off the field

Justin Langer & Dean Jones on the crisis

Audio
Bad Boys Didn’t Do Their Homework

I don’t think that the captain and coach should be selectors as well (agree with Langer). This is a recent thing is Aussie cricket

Border, Waugh and Ponting were not selectors

Its all well and good trying to show how strong disciplinarian you are and how you won't take any crap from players... but this stuff is pretty stupid. *Aussies need to realize that tough mentality they had when they were winning didn't come from just discipline. Those individuals who played then were strong mentally and had the sills and technique to produce in those high pressure moments. *

This team won't become like them just by being strict. Khawaja is not going to become Ponting, Johnson has never been McGrath.

watson is considering retirement. whoa!

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

Some one is going to have to make a u turn on this before it gets way out of hand.

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

I think the coach will be gone soon. This is ridiculous.

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

India won't get a better chance than this to whitewash Australia. Team in disarray + clueless against spin (apart from Clarke). India playing at home and playing well

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

Clarke adamant action was justified. ‘No one can disrespect the coach & team’

Re: Australian team in crisis: Watson leaves tour after Australia axe four

But it could be that Clarke, the drama queen, is the main problem here.

Mickey Arthur is not exempt from blame but he was also the coach of the SA Cricket team which has an even more complex dressing room environment. As far as I remember, he never asked them to write emails to him or do power point presentations. This unfortunate saga has Clarke written all over it

And look at Clarke's justification in the video above. He sounds more like a CEO coming up with his managerial justification BS

Seems like Michael Clarke's crossed the thin line between being passionate and paranoid. The task itself wasn't too odd actually, its the severe punishment for non compliance that's an absolute joke. You don't just suspend 4 of your squad members on a tough tour like this for such a small thing. This is a men's sport ffs, far worse has happened within squads for years but players would always manage to put their individual differences aside for the sake of the team.** Clarke's being too desperate here to defend this lame saga with Aussie patriotism crap to be honest, just look at the comments of their ex greats and all of them are ridiculing this. I don't see any of them relating this stance of Clarke to the typical Aussie cricketing culture. **

For one i dont care a damn about Australian Cricket. If they wish to make themselves the laughing stock of World Cricket which is so sad considering how invincible they were from 1999-2008 then so be it. But if Clarke talks bs about players not respecting the captain and the head coach then the captain and the head coach has no right to disrespect and talk crap about the players in public. **I dont think anyone has given any statements against the captain, coach in the public prior to this episode and even after this episode. I would have sued Clarke and Arthur for wrongful dismissal and character assasination. There is no precedent for a player to write a powerpoint presentation to the coach anywhere.

This big talk of acting tough, team work, rules, discipline is not going to get the Aussies anywhere. They just do not have the talent to be no 1 anywhere and they aren't being men enough to face up to that reality. **

**Why were the players only asked once to complete the 'three point' homework? It was as if they were setting them up to forget. **Kind of like they wanted to punish them and set an example.
Way to win a team over.

They were set to fail really. I am sure Watson was the intended target of this whole exercise - the rest were just collateral damage. Looks better that way too. No singling out anyone and easier to justify.
Plus easy targets for the series blame. No one will come after the captain and the coach for the series loss.
The best result is the rest of the players are scared and play well. Worse off they blame these trouble makers for the unrest.
Brilliant actually.
