Australians raid Muslim homes!
Armed officers have conducted raids on homes in Perth and Sydney in search of information about the radical Muslim group, Jemaah Islamiah, which is suspected of involvement in the Bali bombings.
Civil liberties campaigners say the raids were unnecessarily heavy-handed.
The deputy chairman of the Victorian Ethnic Communities Council, Laurence Abou Khater, says Australian Muslims are frightened.
“The community is not reporting things because they are scared of the authorities and this sends a message that the authorities are against them, and when the authorities come with sledge hammers to break their doors down,” he said.
The chairman of the Australian Arabic Council, Roland Jabbour says members of the community have been ringing in about the raids.
“We have received calls that there has been a number of raids taking place in Melbourne, a number in Preston in particular,” he said.
“We are currently in the process of trying to verify that information by attempting to make contact with individuals that may have been subjected to those raids.”
