On a weekend when Cricket Australia are toasting the members of Allan Border’s 1987 World Cup winning squad, their cricketing descendants can complete a somewhat more modest achievement by sealing the ODI series against Pakistan. Resolve to get the job done was written all over the captain Steven Smith’s hundred to lead a sturdy chase in Perth, and the hosts will be looking for a similarly solid batting display after the malfunctions of the first two games.
To that end both David Warner and Usman Khawaja will be eager for the runs that have eluded them so far, with Travis Head another man eager to go on from the starts he has made in each match. Adam Zampa, meanwhile, will be eagerly awaiting an opportunity to play, having so far been left running the drinks as allrounders have been preferred to his nifty leg spin.
Pakistan are in need of better displays in the field, as it is now patently clear their batsmen struggle to post the sorts of totals now commonly seen among the world’s more successful limited-overs sides. But there will be hope for their returning captain Azhar Ali that the SCG’s pitch can provide the conditions necessary for his spinners to replicate their work at the MCG, with plenty of help from Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan.
Thirty years ago, Australia pushed past Pakistan on their home turf in Lahore to reach the tournament decider; Smith’s collective will want to ensure the final match of this series, in Adelaide on Australia Day, is anything but.

Sharjeel Khan has been stylish, but Pakistan might want more substance from him at the top of the order © Getty ImagesIn the spotlight****
For all his contribution to Smith’s decision to don a headband at the WACA, Adam Zampa would sooner be conspicuous for his bowling. Of the six ODIs Austraia have played at home this season, Zampa has appeared in only one - against New Zealand at the SCG. Based on that evidence, Sunday appears his best chance to return and demonstrate once more why he should be played more often. However, if he isn’t picked, Zampa will have reason to question the value of being in the squad at all - headbands aside.

Scores of 18, 29 and 50 represent a promising upward trend for Sharjeel Khan, who has plenty of power and style at the top of the order for Pakistan. An overall average of 28.65 but a top score of 152 suggests he is yet to make the most of his talents, and he will be keen to go to the next step in Sydney, the venue where he made his Test debut at the start of the year.

Team news
Mitchell Starc is back in Australia’s squad for the SCG, while Adam Zampa will also be pushing for inclusion for the first time in the series.
Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Usman Khawaja, 3 Steven Smith (capt), 4 Peter Handscomb, 5 Travis Head, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 James Faulkner, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Adam Zampa.
Pakistan were led by Mohammad Hafeez at the MCG and the WACA, but Azhar Ali has recovered from the hamstring injury he suffered in Brisbane and will lead the side in Sydney. Azhar is likely to replace Asad Shafiq, who made only 13 and 5 in the second and third ODIs.
Pakistan (possible) 1 Azhar Ali (capt), 2 Sharjeel Khan, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Babar Azam, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 8 Imad Wasim, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Hasan Ali.
Pitch and conditions
The SCG is towards the back end of its busiest month of the season, so the surface may be a little on the tired side. Sydney’s weather forecast is for fine, warm conditions.

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

So if Azhar is back then I’m assuming Shafiq will be dropped. They should bring Hafeez one-down and Babar Azam two-down then.

SCG is normally favorable to spin though a good batting pitch.

Pak needs a big inning by Sharjeel.

My gut-feeling: Pakistan will win this inshallah.

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

For first 10 overs, Pakistan was hammered by Warner and Khwaja but they pulled it back. Just now Sharjeel has dropped Smith so both dangermen out there and it looks like 350 is on the cards.

Aus 1/133 in 24 overs with Warner reaching his century

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Another easy catch dropped by Hassan ali of warner who is on 114. Pakistanis are just digging a very deep hole

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Hassan Ali has taken 3 wickets but just dropped another catch, this time its maxwell and that can be very expensive

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Catch drop update: 5th one. Sharjeel again. A lollypop. Its ridiculous. I think bowlers should stop bowling in protest

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

5/6 drop catches, below average fielding converted singles in doubles, doubles into 4s…the score should have been 270ish instead Pakistan have to chase 350…

And no way This Pakistani team can chase anything above 230…350 is way beyond their league

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Include countless misfields. It was worse than any associate team. I guess we shouldnt mind Ian chappell when he says it again that Pak should not visit Australia till they improve themselves

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Ian Chappel was going soft, if it was me, i would sack the whole team and build from youngsters, the seniors are good for nothing and are only loosing matches for Pakistan for last 10 years …

Give new boys to Mickey Arthur and i bet we can have better team for 2019 world cup

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Great inning by Sharjeel came to an end. 74 of 47 balls. He was my hope in batting line.

Meanwhile world is already laughing on Pakistani fielding masterpiece today:

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

With Umer Akmal on the wicket and so many overs to go, Pakistan is least favorite to get close to the total…

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

We have to accept what the whole world is telling about us. ODI of 90’s has now moved ahead. Our team at best can score around 280’s . For them to hit 300 is a rare thing to happen. Gone r the days when our bowling line up was capable of defending 275 + easily. Our batters have the approach to score 35 - 40 runs with 55 - 60 balls consumed. By this they feel their spot in the team is safe.. Witht is approach , we cannot reach to the upper league. we will remian in the lower league ( among WI , BD , SL ) very sad

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Pathetic fielding as well as pathetic bowling and batting. There is absolutely no penetration from these “medium fast” bowlers. Sack them all.
Amir, Junaid, etc all pathetic. Can’t even learn from Hazelwood and Starc. Can’t play Spin.
Umar Akmal should be thrown out permanently. It’s like he has forgotten how to play. Eff this so-called ****y “talent”. Pure garbage.

Even Jonty Rhodes couldn’t fix the fielding of this team. The lethergic and loser body language is obvious.
Rizwan is useless as a batsman.

Inzi already made excuses a couple of days ago about these losses. Now we await the confirmation that the “boys” will need to play with associate teams in order to gain spot in next WC. I hope they lose there to better teams too. But even then we won’t see the pcb change much, just like every institution in the country the cricket is now on downhill slope. Soon to be the last ranked team these “boys” will be at.

ICC should revoke the test status of this pathetic loser team.

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

Meanwhile, Dhoni, with a strike rate of 69% and a plethora of dot balls, ensure enough pressure build up to lead India to a loss in the 3rd ODI vs England.

But he did show his strong defense.

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

agreed..first squash, then hockey and now cricket.

not trying to be pessimistic but the history of other sports tells us that there is no way cricket will ever be revoked in Pakistan. once we started the downhill we never recovered. it is a dead sport in pakistan. maybe not this time, but we will be eventually kicked out of WC. this is exactly how we got kicked out of hockey WC.

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

uncle he just won you guys 2nd game…just 2 days ago!

Re: Australia v Pakistan, 4th ODI, Sydney

This wat happens when u set the bar so high. Even performance of Dhoni is not enough for Indian fans… They need to see our heroes…
