Australia scraps plan to sell uranium to India
Wednesday, January 16, 2008

SYDNEY: The new Australian government will scrap a landmark deal to sell uranium to India for its nuclear energy programme, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith indicated Tuesday.

The deal was struck by former premier John Howard last August, shortly before his conservative government was ousted in elections by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s Labor Party. **Smith said he had told a visiting Indian envoy that the new government would not sell the nuclear fuel to any country that had not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). “It’s a long standing commitment of the Australian Labor Party that we don’t authorise the export of uranium to countries who are not parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” he said.

“India is a nation state that is not a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. I don’t think there’s any expectation in the international community that it will become a member.”** Smith made the remarks at a news conference after talks in Perth with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s special envoy Shyam Saran, which he described as a “good and friendly meeting”. “The Australian government is very much looking forward to taking the relationship with India to an even better level,” he said.

Howard had defended his government’s decision to sell uranium to India, which has nuclear weapons, saying the deal was subject to strict guarantees that the fuel would be used for electricity generation only. Howard, a strong supporter of US President George W Bush, also noted that the sales would depend on the implementation of a landmark civilian nuclear deal between New Delhi and Washington. The deal would allow India to buy civilian nuclear technology while possessing nuclear weapons, making it an exception under the NPT.

Australia has the world’s largest known reserves of uranium and had been under pressure from the US to match a deal to sell uranium concentrate to China - which has signed the NPT - with an agreement to do the same for India. India’s deal for the US to provide nuclear fuel and technology has been on hold - in part because of opposition within Singh’s own administration. China has also expressed reservations over the deal, citing concerns about the proliferation of nuclear materials. afp

Ooooh, that’s gotta hurt.

Hindustanis were stupid enough to sacrifice their decades old relations and pacts with Iran just for a few nuclear biscuits! I can’t believe that a billion people (excluding the Muslims) blind folded themselves and jumped into the unknown!!!

I guess the West really knows how to make a dog wag it’s tail with an invisible bone.

AUSTRALIA has left open the option of supporting international uranium sales to India, even though the Rudd Government has ruled out Australian yellowcake exports to the energy-hungry South Asian giant.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith announced earlier this week that Australia would not sell uranium to India unless it signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

But a spokesman for Mr Smith said yesterday that the Government has not yet made a decision on whether to block uranium sales to India by other countries — an option open to Australia and members of the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group, which sets global export controls for nuclear materials.

Mr Smith risked Delhi’s ire by junking the Howard government’s decision last year to push ahead with a uranium export agreement in light of India’s long-standing political stability and record as a responsible nuclear power.

This plays out in the shadow of a critical deal between the US and India to share civilian nuclear technology. The so-called 1-2-3 agreement is mired in opposition in the Indian parliament, but analysts warned yesterday if the deal took off again, the Rudd Government’s reversal on uranium sales could have “quite serious” ramifications for Australia-India relations.

“In the longer term, it could emerge as a source of friction between India and Australia. But that would only occur if the 1-2-3 agreement were to go ahead,” said Sandy Gordon, a South Asia specialist with the University of Wollongong.

Mr Smith’s spokesman said Australia appreciated the significance of the US-India deal and would take that into account in the Government’s response.

That's okay man...but need not loose hope. keep looking for uranium to power reactors. We cannot pollute the environment by using other fuels. Nuclear energy is the cleanest after wind energy!..

Aussie govt lambasted for reverting on deal with India

The funniest part is that Australia is also indicating that they support waiving signing of NPT for India!
