Tendulkar in squad for first two Tests against Australia
**

Sachin Tendulkar has been named in a 15-man Indian squad for the first two Tests against Australia. Mohammad Kaif and Murali Kartik also got the call in a squad that only had room for three fast bowlers. The squad is to meet up in Bangalore on October 4, two days ahead of the first Test. Sourav Ganguly has been confirmed as captain for the whole series.

Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar are the fast bowlers selected, while Ashish Nehra, who has recently had trouble with his ankle, was left out. The new selection panel also discussed the names of Dheeraj Jadhav, Venugopal Rao and Sridharan Sriram.

The team was picked towards the end of the India Seniors v India A match in Bangalore. John Wright, who watched the Seniors win after India A had dominated the first three days, said: "It was good preparation. Especially today with Sehwag and Yuvraj getting time in the middle and scoring big hundreds. After all the one-day cricket we've played recently we needed this - a good, hard four-day game. What was especially pleasing was the players on the fringe also answered some questions - guys like Jadhav, Kaif and Sriram. In that sense it was a valuable four days. Ultimately the Seniors won the game. They came back under pressure to win the game. But it was good to see we have real depth and quality in the India A side."

When asked about India's recent one-day slump, Wright was hopeful things would turn around in the Tests. "Now we're back to Test cricket, and to be honest we've played some very good Test cricket over the last two series. Sometimes it is difficult to get momentum going in one-dayers, and most of the boys are really looking forward to getting into Test mode. I've never had any doubts about this side. I've always had huge trust and enormous belief in their ability."

The squad includes Aakash Chopra and Yuvraj Singh, but Wright was non-committal when asked who would open the batting with Virender Sehwag. However, he hinted that it could be Chopra: "We've had two boys who've done a very good job for us against Australia in Australia and also in Pakistan"

Wright was happy with the balance of the bowling attack. "We've certainly got enough variation in there. The players enjoy bowling in Indian conditions, which tend to suit them a bit more," he said, before explaining why Ajit Agarkar got the call ahead of Nehra. "Ashish [Nehra] has done outstandingly well in one-dayers, but the fact that Ajit [Agarkar] has such a good record against Australia went in his favour."

The Australians have made no secret of their respect for this Indian team, and Wright returned the compliment. "We respect Australia, but we must be the only side to have a win and a draw in our last two series against them. I have no doubt that they will be hungry, because they haven't won here in such a long time."

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly an unforgettable over in which Sehwag – who had reached his century with a straight six – smashed Murali Kartik for 35 runs, including five sixes in an arc between midwicket and extra-cover.

Who’s fooling who?](BBC SPORT | Cricket | Who's fooling who?)

**The reason for India’s indifferent form in recent weeks can, according to some, be summed up in two words - Sachin Tendulkar. **

Tendulkar has been undergoing intensive treatment for tennis elbow
Ever since he was ordered to rest a sore left elbow, the team have failed to reproduce the panache which carried them to Test and one-day series wins in Pakistan earlier this year.

Imagine therefore the relief felt by millions of cricket-mad Indian supporters when Tendulkar’s name was announced in the squad for next week’s crucial Test series opener against Australia in Bangalore.

It is hard to believe the absence of one man could have had such an effect on a batting line-up which also includes the likes of Sehwag, Laxman, Dravid and Ganguly.

But in seven one-day games without him, they won only two - one a dead rubber in a three-match series against England, and one against Kenya - and only totalled over 250 once.

“Tendulkar’s absence has made a difference in terms of morale. That kind of experience is never easy to replace,” former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar said earlier this month.

There are only a handful of indviudals whose team’s mental resolve can rise or fall accoring to their involvement or non-involvement - Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan and West Indies skipper Brian Lara are others.

Certainly, it is inconceivable that the loss of captain Ricky Ponting with a broken thumb has undermined the self-belief of Australia as they look to win a series in India for the first time since 1969-70.

There is no doubt, however, that Australia would prefer to play an Indian team without Tendulkar in it.

He has scored 760 runs in seven home Tests against them at an average of 63 and his innings of 177 at Bangalore in March 1998 - albeit in a losing cause - remains the highest individual score at the ground.

But is Tendulkar fit enough to make the final XI next Wednesday?

Has he a realistic chance of playing, or is his inclusion in the squad merely a smokescreen to try and give the rest of the team and supporters a psychological lift and keep Australia guessing?

“The injury has been rehabilitated. His fitness will be assessed on a day-to-day basis,” insisted SK Nair, secretary to the Board of Control.

Only 48 hours earlier, however, Tendulkar admitted his time in the nets was still restricted, he was having to use a lighter bat and had lost power in his strokes.

"There’s some muscle loss, I can’t just go bang bang.

“I have been advised to bat only for 10 minutes at a stretch to begin with, and not for say two or three hours,” he was quoted as saying.

If India are to beat Australia, they may need Tendulkar to bat for eight, nine or 10 hours, not two or three

And the various statements about his injury suggest Australia are already facing spin even though the action in the middle has yet to begin.

First Test pitch ‘terrible’: Buchanan](http://uk.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2004/OCT/062220_AAP_04OCT2004.html)

John Buchanan, the Australian coach, described the pitch at Chinnaswamy Stadium as “terrible” as groundsmen scrubbed away the last remnants of grass with steel brushes and the head curator declared: “Spin.”

The bone-dry wicket for the first Test at Bangalore could have passed for a 22-yard stretch of desert less than 48 hours before the first ball was due to be bowled on Wednesday, with a network of cracks running from one end of the barren surface to the other.

Sourav Ganguly claimed Australia was fretting about playing his side and said they would miss Ricky Ponting more than India would miss Sachin Tendulkar, but the craggy pitch overshadowed any attempts from Ganguly to begin a verbal stoush.

The track was obviously being groomed for Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble and possibly a third Indian slow bowler in Murali Kartik, but the kickback for Australia was that Shane Warne would also derive great benefit as he chases Muttiah Muralitharan’s world wicket-taking record.

“By all reports it should hold together, but it looks terrible,” Buchanan said. "It looks like it’s going to break up. You’re just not sure what’s underneath, how much preparation.

"We suspect it will gradually dust up a little bit. Who knows what it will be doing on the fourth and fifth day. I wouldn’t expect it to be breaking up on the third day. That sounds like a commentator’s comment, doesn’t it? There’s probably a key lost down there.

“The upside is because it’s abrasive one would expect the ball to reverse swing [for the fast bowlers]. And it should be a little bit up and down. It might skid, so the ball could shoot along a little bit. That’s a positive for Warney.”

Rahul Dravid smiled wryly but declined to share his thoughts on the state of the pitch before the Australian fast bowler, Michael Kasprowicz, said he could already feel a sore back coming on.

Australia’s chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns, said the curator’s masterpiece was not a surprise and claimed it was unlikely to alter the makeup of the side, with Australia still expected to field three fast bowlers and Warne while giving young batsman Michael Clarke a Test debut. “It seems it’s going to be hard work everywhere,” said Hohns.

Tendulkar is yet to be formally ruled out of the Test with his elbow injury but seems certain to be unavailable alongside Ponting, whose broken thumb will keep him out of the series until the third Test at Nagpur.

Any news on broadcast for USA viewers?

that’s the only way India can win the test series - by making things suited for them than to opponent.
