Austerity in pakistani society

why is that despite all the rhetoric about an islamic republic austerity, such an important islamic virtue is disappearing fast from our society ? just watching pak TV shows how much the middleclass is becoming increasingly materialistic

Re: Austerity in pakistani society

Its not just 'middle class', unless the focus was on middle class only or middle class is considered as religious-flag-bearer. The phenomena of materialism is neither new nor 'faster', its just more 'visible' now. Religion was mostly being followed culturally anyway so what did we really lose? May be some Mosques/Molvies lost some 'namazis'?

Re: Austerity in pakistani society

It's the opposite in the west especially in the UK, there were many youngsters who performed Hajj. Lots of young people coming towards Islam. InshAllah Pakistanis bring back Islam into their lives.

Re: Austerity in pakistani society

das reich i think the appropriate term for the phenomenon being seen is called "nau-daulatya-pana"

Re: Austerity in pakistani society

There is nothing wrong with austerity. But the ascetic should be this-worldly not other-worldly. That's how the Protestants helped bring about the Industrial Revolution, capitalism, etc (or made the conditions conducive to it as Weber said).
