Pakistan’s selectors have named a strong 16-man A squad to take on their Australian counterparts in the first one-day match at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore, which takes place on September 5.
The squad will be captained by Faisal Iqbal, and includes several fringe members of the Pakistan national side, including the openers Yasir Hameed and Taufeeq Umar.

The fast bowler Mohammad Sami has not been included in the squad as he is currently unwell. He has a minor groin problem and is suffering from a viral infection. The PCB’s doctor, Riaz, has advised him rest for ten days.
“Sami’s absence is a big setback for us,” Salahuddin Ahmed, the chief selector, told The News. “He would have been our main strike bowler. Doctors have advised him rest and he may return for the last few matches of the series.”
However, batsmen Hasan Raza and Asim Kamal were overlooked. Ahmed said that Raza would be considered for the four-day matches that follow the one-dayers.

Squad 1 Faisal Iqbal (capt), 2 Taufeeq Umar, 3 Khalid Lateef, 4 Yasir Hameed, 5 Naved Lateef, 6 Sohail Tanvir, 7 Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Tahir Khan, 9 Mohammad Khalil, 10 Abdur Rauf, 11 Mohammad Irshad, 12 Shahid Yousuf, 13 Junaid Zia, 14 Najaf Shah, 15 Mansoor Amjad, 16 Riffatullah Mohmand

Karachi trio still in contention: ‘A’ series against Aussies

KARACHI, Sept 1: The Chairman of National Selection Committee, Salahuddin Ahmed, on Saturday dispelled the impression that Hasan Raza, Asim Kamal and Mohammad Sami were excluded from the Pakistan ‘A’ squad for the one-day series against Australia ‘A’ on the basis of any discrimination.

The chief selector said the Karachi-based trio is still in contention for selection during the coming series. “I want to explain the exact situation. The squad (which was named on Friday) has been picked for the first one-day game. We felt that Hasan Raza, who is a very good player, would suit the team better in the longer version of the game,” Salahuddin told Dawn.

He further said that Hasan not only remains in contention for the two four-day fixtures against the Australians but the selectors could still recall the 25-year-old Hasan for the remaining two one-day matches if the situation required.
“Asim Kamal was not considered for selection because he didn’t participate in the training camp at the time of selection. He had left for Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. But Asim is in our plans for the four-day matches,” the chief selector added.

About Mohammad Sami, Salahuddin clarified that the fast bowler needed at least 10 more days to recover from a viral infection as well as a groin injury.
“Sami is unfit at the moment. But once he recovers and proves his match-fitness, he will be definitely considered for the four-day fixtures,” he concluded.
Australia ‘A’, led by all-rounder Adam Voges, were scheduled to arrive in Lahore late on Saturday. The one-day matches are slated for Lahore (Sept 5 and 9) and Sheikhupura (Sept 7). The first four-day game begins in Faisalabad from Sept12 and the second from Sept 19 in Lahore.

Re: AUS A vs PAK A -2007 tour

Hasan Raza has usually been the captain of the A side, so it wouldn't make sense to exclude him. He's a very good player. And why's Sallu calling him a 25-year old? He was 25 two years ago when he last played in a Test against England.
