There can be alot of meaning extracted from the hadith. In my personal opinion (which can be wrong) this hadith is related to one of the advices given by HAzrat Luqman (a.s) to his son, which is also mentioned in the Quran. The translation of which I remember is: (May Allah forgive me if there is any mistake)
Son, Don't speak about the things which are not "related"( or concerned) to you.
From this I understand that if the age of a woman doesn't effect your life or play a vital role in your life than it is better to avoid asking it.
Ofcourse if I want to marry anyone than I might ask her age, other than that I don't think there is any use unless I am dying because of curiosity (Which I am sure inshAllah wouldn't happen lol)
