Attock rhymes with Khattak

In 1581 AD Akbar laid the foundations of fort on eastern bank of Indus and named it Atak (Attock) Banaras. Mughal historian Badayuni (1540-1615) tell us that the name was chosen to rhyme with Khattak , the other frontier town. Abu Fazal tell us that Khattak was then known as Khattak banaras.

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

Raza Ali Abidi (famous broadcaster) gave different view in his book 'Jourbnaili SaRak' or 'Sher Darya'. He says that Akbar and other Mughals had a passion for duplicating buildings Like there was a planing for black Taj mahal similar to original Taj mahal. Similarly, there was a city with name Attock (in the part which is India now). There is another theory that due to river, some construction was delayed and therefore they named the place attack (which is delay in Hindi / Urdu).

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

Reza Ali Abidi of 20th century is more reliable source and authority on this or the court historians of Mughal emperor Akbar?

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

Raza Ali Abidi also referred to some court historian.

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

Which one?

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

The myth of replicating or duplicating is not correct. The black Taj Mahal was not planned to duplicate white Taj Mahal. It was planned as a mark of mourning where Shah Jahan was supposed to be buried.

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

The name of other frontier town was not Khattak. Its name was Akorra, where the Akorra branch of Khattak tribe was settled.

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

Considering the religious nature of Aurangzeb, how can we assume that he would built a black Taj for mourning death of the father he himself put in prison.

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

Khushhal Khan belonged to the Akorra clan of Khattaks. When revenue collection of River Attock was granted to Yousafzais by the Mughals, several tribes resented. The revenue collection had been granted to Yousafzais by Mughals as a compensation for their heavy losses when they were massacred and driven out of Swat. The tribes that revolted included Safis, Mohmands & Shinwaris from Peshawar region, Afridis from Adam Khel region and Khattaks from Attock, Pabbi & Kohat region. In this revolt, Khushhal Khan acted as a front leader and consequently, Akorra came to be known as Akorra Khattak.

Re: Attock rhymes with Khattak

The idea of constructing a Black Taj Mahal had been envisaged by Shah Jahan for himself. The same was not materialized because of the war of succession among his sons and later his confinement by Aurangzeb.
