The Attock Bridge over the Indus River connects the provinces of Punjab and NWFP
The bridge at Attock is one of the most important transportation junctions in Pakistan. Its significance dates to ancient times. Because the Indus river banks on both sides are so close here, it was the right location for boat bridges going back to Alexander the Great’s conquest of Punjab, later Mughal invasions and the British period.
The famous Indian mathematician Panini is said to have been born near Attock around 500 BCE. A huge fort was constructed at Attock by Akbar to supply his Afghan expeditions in the 17th century. Today it serves as a key check post for traffic from Lahore and Islamabad to Peshawar and the Afghan frontier.

Looking into Afghanistan from the then Indian, now Pakistani side of the Khyber Pass. The image is likely to be from the 1919 Third Afghan War.
**1910 - Afghan Women in Kerzawahs, Khyber Pass
**
Tribesmen and women traveled freely between India and Afghanistan
A Kerzawah is a popular method of transport on the Indo-Afghan frontier, the camel being the usual beast of burden, and able to carry four persons in a load. According to the tenets of their religion, the native women are very jealous of strangers seeing their faces, and, unless quite secure from observation, the kerzawah is kept draped with curtains.
1910 - Afridi Girl, Khyber Pass
An Afridi Girl. The Afridis are an Afghan or Pathan people, numbering about 300,000, inhabiting the mountainous region south of the Hindu-Kush. They consist of a number of separate clans, often at feud with each other. In these districts female children are in a minority, and when a girl is in the matrimonial market - after the native custom - they frequently fetch good prices. The Afridi children are very shy and fearful of sitting for their portrait.

1930 - Frontier of India, Khyber Pass
The often photographed sign at the Torkham border between British India and Afghanistan.
Today a similar sign announces the Frontier of Pakistan. The border crossing itself is at the end of the Khyber Pass coming from the Pakistan side, after a long and winding road through largely barren hills. The Khyber district is itself tribal area, so while foreigners and people traveling by road had to show passports and relevant travel documents, tribesmen were able to cross freely between British India and Afghanistan.

1910 - Sepoys Khyber Rifles
A para-military force created by the British and now under the Pakistan Army
The native tribes of India have, since the first occupation of the country by the British, been trained to act as soldiers to guard their own districts. These Sepoys, as they are known, make excellent troops, especially when officered by Europeans. The Khyber Rifles are recruited from various frontier tribes, such as the Afridis and are employed practically solely in the forts and roads of Khyber Province.
