i am for the most part a very calm, tolerant and patient person…even if i am interacting with someone whose thinkin process is completely opposite to mine etc…however, there is somethin that i get really annoyed by, and it annoys me to no end…
and that is, generalizations…any sort of generalizations pretty much…its so bad, once i didn’t talk to my best friend for almost 3 whole months cuz he made a generalization that really pissed me off…
i’m not saying i’m perfect…i generalize as well, but definitly nothin as big as what i’ve come across with other ppl…and if the generalizations are seemingly harmless/small, i do tend to ignore 'em without any poblems…
now i also realize that everyone is different, and everyone has a distinct outlook on life which influences their attitude in such cases towards generalizations…e.g. a bad experience with a trucker on the highway cutting u off, and all of a sudden “all truckers” are bad…its only natural…
my question is, how do u go about rationalizing to someone that his/her generalizations are incorrect and need to be reevaluated…and if he/she is really strong headed, fail to stop those generalizations, and u know that won’t change, then how do u carry on talkin to 'em/meeting them etc and ignoring what u so strongly feel about urself?
PS just to give u an idea of what sorta "major" generalizations i am talkin about that piss me off are things like "all hijabi girls are opressed" and "all bearded men are terroists"...not restricted to the religion category of course, broadens out to encompass everything...
tis bit hard trying to cahnge someones view when they are not willing to listen. It gets harder if the person ur dealing with is older than u and already very set in their ways.. ie parents, grandparents..etc.
Best thing to do is, give them ur opinion in the nicest way possible and give them good examples.. and then leave it to them to decide what is right and wrong... we can never enforce our opinion and judgement on someone...
It's totally understandable why it'd piss you. I get pissed at such stuff as well. But you can't really do anything or change their opinions can you? So yeah, being patient or as sadzz said give examples and let them know what you think about it coz if you do that it does make them think that you don't really agree so they'd shut up atleast.
on a more serious note DM, we might all want to be completely rid of stereotypes and generalisations, or even think we are, but imo one can never be completely free of them and we all do make judgement based on generalisations. i dont think many times its unfair either in certain cases, though sometimes they can be unjustified. a lot of times we base generalisations on our experiences too.

i think people need to stop with terms like pigs, sluts and what not… (sorry pcg, not a direct hit on you). You cant go thru a thread without hearing someone badmouth the opposite gender..
why cant we all learn to accept there are bad eggs in this world and yes we have had the unfortunate chance of mingling with a few.. but there are many good ones too..
Hmm I can imagine just how angry you must feel.You're already a very calm type of person, imagine what happens when a person with my temper is faced with such issues! Personally I think that the generalizations are often annoying when the person making them--refuses to see the whole picture.Khair Iv had discussions with aunties and even my own parents about certain generalizations.But some people just cant seem to get out of the little bubble they live in.

yea sadzzz, i try doin that...its just really frustrating when the other person doesn't even listen to what u say...theres no reasoning with 'em like suroor said, if they think they're right then thats it :p heh...i know that suroor isn't like that though :D
Destinee, heh, yea i do let myself be heard as well, tell 'em i don't agree...and u know, sometimes there's no stoppin 'em, they continue on sayin whatever, and thats when i get pissed off...ah well...
