Stories, crossword worksheets, fill in the blanks.. any activity that will keep them busy.
I teach 6-9 years old and I always make a story of the lesson, ask them to hold on to their questions until the end just so they remain involved, and last but not least my class loves crosswords so I make a lot of those from their lesson!
and I also give them bonus questions for the next week so if they bring the correct answer, they get a candy/chocolate/or Star Student certificate but I have noticed that they prefer candy over the certificate :D

make it fun, interesting for them, excite them about the subject matter, make it interactive…be an actor infront of them.
