Thats a very unfortunate news and as devastating as it could be due to any other natural calamity. Plus there are always diseases spread out so the count can get a hike.
Officials are warning that the extreme temperatures are likely to continue throughout the weekMay 25, 2015 11:57PM ET Updated May 26, 2015 8:15AM ET
Soaring temperatures have gripped parts of southern and northern India in an extreme heat wave which has killed at least 800 people and looks set to continue this week, officials said on Monday.
The hottest place in India was Allahabad, a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, which saw mercury rise to 117.8 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday, while the capital Delhi recorded a high of 110.3 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the 539 recorded deaths have been of construction workers, the elderly or the homeless in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, said officials, but some deaths have also occurred in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. India’s Meteorological Department said it had issued heat warnings to several states where temperatures were forecast to top 113 degrees Fahrenheit over the next few days.
**“As of now, we don’t predict any respite from the extreme heatwave for the next few days,” said spokesman B. P. Yadav. ** Director of Andhra Pradesh’s Disaster Management Department K. Dhananjaya Reddy said 325 people had died of sunstroke or dehydration in the state in the last three days. “We are advising people not to go to work between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” said Reddy. “We have also opened centers in different places specially in urban areas for the distribution of water and buttermilk.” More than 200 people have died in the state of Telangana, officials said. The government has canceled the leave of all doctors as hospitals were being flooded with cases of heatstroke, he said, adding that compensation of 100,000 rupees, which is about $1,575, will be given to families of people who had died. Taxi drivers in Kolkata — capital of West Bengal state where four deaths have been reported — refused to work between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. after two cabbies died in their cars last week. The monsoon, predicted to hit southern India’s coastline on May 31, will bring some relief from the high temperatures, said weather officials.
Was watching IPL.finals played in Kolkata. One commentator was teasing g Ravi Sastri - who was keeping ac at 16 degree C. That really got under my skin. Least one can do is set ac at no less than 25 Deg C. What kind of a selfish person freezes the room literally while outside people are dying of heat. Just because one has money - and in this case ac was free for sastri - doesn’t mean one uses way way way more than ones share
Another tax on the poor - overworked ac throwing out heat from rooms to atmosphere.
Thats wut happens when the difference of money distribution is as big as heaven and earth.. And on the top of it let their govt spend another zillion on nukes and another few trillion on going to Mars
I really don’t understand the mind set of some wealthy people - why waste resources? Even in the us, some wealthy folks use private jets, outdoor heated pools. In fact not so wealthy people use snowmobiles and other fancy vehicles that takes them through wooded areas. The humongous RVS for a family of 5. Motor boats.
It’s not just the rich in India. It is irresponsible people in some western countries who don’t buy it climate change.
We are one earth. When we over consume everyone gets affected.
Having said that the rich in India are particularly more callous towards the poor than anywhere else.
As for military expenditure, yes, it is obscenely high in several countries. And again the poor suffer. And the soldiers in the front lines. No one else gives sh1t. Except during independence day or such where there will be empty words for the brave.
But I can tell you, if you a quick viral survey you’ll see how people will still be loving those celebrations/parties more than thinking about the severe humanitarian damage being done here.
As someone said, we show what people want to see!!
My post was simply directed at the extravagance in the face of calamity. If Mrs Ambani had simply taken the funds for the party and contributed to relief, that would have been great. If all team owners and top star players gave a portion of their incomes to relief that wouod have been great.
To celebrate during such times shows the lack of humanity of it all. As I said, the rich in India are particularly callous towards the poor.
