Atkins Diet

Can someone explain this diet to me.

No Carbohydrates but more meat ? Isnt this screwed? Its hard to believe that all this meat can be good for you in the long term.

Taken from the site

Your body burns both carbohydrates and fat as fuel for its energy needs. Carbohydrate is the first fuel to be metabolized. However, when you cut down sufficiently on your intake of carbohydrates, your body converts from the metabolic pathway of burning carbohydrate to burning fat as the primary energy source. This results in weight loss.

So I need more information as what to avoid and what to eat. I dont know if this really helps but I wanna try it out.

Take a look at this and also this .

thanks babz, I will research on it. There seem to be good ideas there.

Its night time and I am feeling hungry, I think I will go for a big glass of yummy tab water.

Sahz hon, did you not get my PM that I sent you some days ago, I was waiting for a reply. :( sniff

No I didn't........send it again. I never get nice PM's these days.

now?

Yes. Hold your horses, I'm replying.

b4 you start the diet, do a search on recent studies that compared atkins low carb to low fat diets....though the low carbs had great results in the first 6 months..after one year the difference was nill...

amelie,

I read the same thing in this article.

some more useful articles

yummy for all choco lovers

You wont believe, I just came back from a book shop where I bought three books for 60€ eek ! one is explaining the Atkins diet and two are diet recipe books with pictures.

ok happy atkins, see ya all :wava:

Good luck with it all Saadia. The Induction phase is the toughest of them all, but also the phase where you see the most results.

I think the basic concept of Atkins diet is unnatural. To lose weight by making the body go into overdrive by burning more calories than its getting through the food can have very serious consequences for those who are likely to get kidney problems. Not to mention that the weight you lose will be gained back in no time as soon as you are off, cz you are burning the body's reserve. No wonder Dr Atkins died a fat man.

No offence but doesn't this say it all :D

You think so, but do you have any scientific proof that its all so bad, almost everyone praises it. Well the clue is to loose weight with avoiding all those high carbohydrates foods, like bread, rice, pasta, potatos, suger and suger containing ithems, like some fruits, so that more stored body fat is burned. No yo yo effect if you keep a low carbo diet all life long.

Well anyway no worry, I just want to loose some extra pounds, not to become a skinny super model. :)

I will post my results. First I have to read the book.

Well, you wanna do that diet, go ahead. On my last annual check up, I discussed it with my doctor and he completely trashed the whole atkins diet concept. Then, I had opportunity to talk to 2-3 other doctors in various social functions (1 of them is a professor in Stanford University Hospital) and all of them were unanimous that Atkins is bad news for anyone at risk of blood pressure and the risk of kidney problems is very high. By the way, no one should embark on a new diet plan, especially as radical as Atkins, without talking to their doctor.

One other thing, the reason why Atkins is so popular because people think going on this diet they can eat all sorts of means (which they love) and still lose weight. Kinda too good to be true, haan?

I guess the best way to get to a healthy weight is to eat sensibly and exercise regularly. Thats all.

By the way, for women especially, check this out

Well, to be fair these are just three views. You can Google for a more well-rounded discussion. One example is

I personally know someone who lost 40 lbs in about 6 months w/ Atkins. Of course they were walking 4 miles a day too :)

Just so you know… this is in today’s news.

CNN - May 27, 2004

I'd suggest the south beach diet over atikins...some research is also showing that people are losing wieght, under wieght but clincially obese...i don't completly understand this but it has to do with body composition and lipid counts....

the south beach diet is a bit more sane, limits carbs, has healthier eating and great ideas for snacking...
