At what age does kid start roza?

My daughter is 8 and she wants to fast on weekend but I want to give it one more year. And rozas are too long these days.So what you say what would be right age for kid to start a roza?

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

When they become baaligh is when roza is farz on them .. for girls when their menstruation starts, ... for boys, when their voice changes .. so its differennt for different kids ..

^But you cannot force them that this year you have to start 30 rozas. They need little bit practice before that and it is better that they should fast before they reach puberty age.

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

agreed .. I think that is why we heard 10 years ..

But UZ, because Roza is not farz on them, if they have to break it in the middle, I guess they can without any repercussion, so let her keep it as for next few ramdans, the Roza are only going to get longer and hotter.

Mybe start with one daRh kaa or aadahy din kaa .. just so she gets the discipline ...

Thats a nice idea I'll let her fast for half day or kiddy roza whenever she feels hungry she can break it.Becharay kids when they will have rozas fard on them it will be long rozas.

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

i remember when we were younger, my mom would let us keep half day rozas. so we would wake up at sehri, have something to eat. and then halfway through the roza..usually during lunch time, mom would let us eat a little something. and then we'd keep the rest of the roza until iftari.

it helped us understand what fasting was about..and we got some practice without going for food the whole day. your daughter's still young to fast the whole day, especially since it's a long day as you mentioned. so start her off slowly. maybe start with the weekends as she doesn't have school those days, and won't feel uncomfortable at not eating when at school.

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

Yeah I agree with the replies. My lil sis is 7 and she feels really left out when everyone else gets up for sehri, so we wake her up (she LOVES to be woken up that early :konfused: ), she eats with us, goes to sleep & then “opens” her roza when she gets up again :cb

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

Ya I think thats a good idea. Its not obligatory on them until they reach puberty, but its good to let them experience the fast a little bit beforehand, especially if they are so keen, thats a great thing so you should nuture their enthusiasm. Let them keep a partial or half day fast on the weekend, then slowly slowly they will be able to do more. Encourage them and tell them about the virtures of fasting and how much it pleases Allah SWT and then Insha Allah when they are old enough they will do it happily and easily

Aww, she sounds so adorable Mashallah! That’s actually a really good idea b/c my necies and nephew also insists on keeping a roza but we feel that they are too young…and now I understand they just want to be involved in everything!
Thank you so much for that idea…and I can tell my sister that she can ‘open’ his fast at breakfast time! Hehe!

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

In our family kids are so enthusiastic that they start fasting at a really young age. I don’t even remember when I started fasting. But my younger cousins started fasting properly at age 8. While those younger than them get up for sehri, even 3 year old Musa. And if one forgets to wake them up or thinks of letting them sleep because they are too young, there is such a row in the morning:cb:

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

i remember when i was little i would beg my parents to wake me up for sehri so i could join in and eat yummy parata's etc. then my roza would break in the morning! lol.

Hehe, aww yeah! No problem  Its nice to actually see them interested & wanting to get involved at that age, even though its not farz for them to so do.. MashAllah. :phati:

an off topic thought but worth sharing ..

this thread shows one thing that kids get excited even about hardship, when they see the elders and parents doing it with happy and exciting attitude. The Ibadaat does not become a burden on kids because they see our enthusiasm about it. That is such a great way of introducing kids to the prayers and obligations of our our religion by doing it with 'Ehtemaam' and making a big deal out of them (in positive way), be it Salaat, Fasting or Zakat.

My niece who s 14 announced to her family yesterday that she is going to do hijaab from now on. No one asked her let alone forced her but she has seen her mom and older sister doing that and concluded that this the right thing for her to do.

Point is, we can influence our kids mind so easily, so we better be doing the right things so they can become good humans and good Muslims. Or they can easily learn dance, songs and stupidities from us also by observing us. Choice is ours.

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

i started fasting when i was 16 :(

mashallah.

Re: At what age does kid start roza?

When they become baligh. around 9 for girls and it depends on the boy..when he can ejaculate.

I think I had my Roza Kushai when I was about 8 years old...and I was 11 when I kept all my fasts during Ramadhan. As TLK said, you literally follow in your parents footsteps. I had seen my mom and dad both finish up one Quran Shareef during ramadan and I have made a habit of it ever since.

My youngest brother is 7 and he gets super annoyed if my parents dont wake him up for Sehri. He's been like that since he was 3/4 years old. My mom has started him on half day rozas since he really insists on fasting. I think it's great mashaAllah to get him into the habit of it and it'll be much easier for him later in life.

:k: I agree. And MashAllah, thats so nice about your neice!

As they say, actions speak louder than words.. you often need to set an example to kids if you want them to follow. And we should always try and spread a really positive attitude around the home about Ramadan, Salat & festivals like Eid etc. Kids pick up positive vibes so easily and then LOVE to join in! An example: my sister is 7 and she happily reads all 5 prayers alongside me. She loves it when we do wudu together and then pray together, she even encourages the rest of the fam to pray more, MashAllah. May Allah keep her in His protection.. ameen.
