At what age did your mother let you cook on the stove?

The father of a girl of 12 allows her to cook when she is with him and her parents are divorced. This is only on the weekends when she’s with him. She ended up dropping a pot of boiling hot water on herself while her father was out getting their dog vacinnated and had asked her to finish cooking. She ended up getttin 2nd degree burns on her whole leg because of the accident. Wow it looked scary.

I was a bit shocked when her mother told me because she only let’s her use the microwave and here’s her ex husband letting the girl cook on a hot stove almost burning her skin off.

It ain’t my business…I learned to cook on the stove when I was 16 or 17 and my mom watched me the whole time.

I never asked for permission lol, i think i was 10 or 11, though i never started seriously cooking until i moved out for college.

I might be the outlier here but was 5 when I first started cooking simple things on the stove but my mother was a chef and I was supervised heavily until around 10 or 12. By that point I was fairly confident to do basic recipes (scrambled eggs, soup, a piece of fish, etc.) My son who is eight is a bit more skittish around the gas stove than I was at his age but he can fry an egg, make little burger patters (I help him cut harder vegetables), and make a cup of tea. He does these things with my supervision (except the tea.) It’s important to me that he is competent in the kitchen.

I was 7 when i started making tea on the stove (for guests - which meant unsupervised) but that’s all i knew at the time. I started *cooking *when i was about 9.

There is no age limit that you can define. Some kids are smart enough to handle it at early age some cant even do it at 16/17. Parents are the best judge if their kids can handle it or not. For me, my mom allowed me to cook since I was 9/10 and as far as I remember, i never disappointed her with an accident.

Would you let your child cook on the stove at between age 6-12, unsupervised.

Obviously, this girl’s dad thought she was ready to cook at such a young age.
