At the Doors of Safar :)

I did not realise until a wise brother poitned out to me today the misconceptions associated with this month! A hadith:

" Allah’s Apostle said, (There is no) 'Adwa (contagious disease conveyed without Allah’s permission), nor is thereany bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar " — Narrated by Abu Hurairah- Sahih al-Bukhari 7.608

And the following with bracketed inserts, from
http://www.jamiat.co.za/calendar/about_islamic_months.htm

Safar

Month of the year: Safar is the second month of the Islamic calendar.

[Muharram, Safar, Rabi’ul-Awwal, Rabi’uth-Thani, these are the months of Islam, la-la-la-la-la, Jumadul-Ula, Jumadul-Ukhra, Rajab and Sha’ban, Ramadan-Ramadan- Ramadan and Shawwal, la-la-la-la-la, Dhu’l-Qa’dati and Dhu’l-Hijjah- these are the months of Islam!]

Literal meaning: Empty. During this month the houses used to be empty and deserted because the ban on going to war in the month of Muharram came to an end and everyone proceeded towards the battlefield.

Safar also means to be yellow. When the names of the months were being given it was the season of autumn and the leaves of the trees were yellow.

—> Many people have erroneous beliefs regarding this month i.e. it is a month of misfortune and calamities. The teachings of Allâh Ta’âla and His beloved Rasûl sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gives us clear guidelines on such incorrect beliefs.

Allâh Ta’âla says in the Qur’ân: *“No kind of calamity can occur, except by the will of Allâh”. *(Surah 64-Ayat 11).

These erroneous beliefs have also been condemned in the context of the following Ahâdîth:

  • There is no superstitious owl, bird, no star-promising rain, no bad omen in the month of Safar. (Sahih Muslim).

  • There is no bad omen in the month of Safar and no Ghouls (evil spirits) (Sahih Muslim).

  • There is no evil omen, no superstitious owl, bird and no bad omen in the month of Safar (Bukhari).
The above Ahâdîth clearly refutes all incorrect beliefs and superstitions regarding the month of Safar. These incorrect beliefs flow from the pre-Islamic period of Jâhiliyyah [Days of Ignorance].

The Month of Safar During the Days of Ignorance:

The Muhaddithîn have recorded many of the superstitions harboured by the Arabs during the Days of Ignorance. A few are mentioned below:

  • The pre-Islamic Arabs believed Safar to be a snake which lives in the stomach of a human being and when hungry, bites the person. This is the discomfort one experiences when gripped by the pangs of hunger.

  • Some said Safar are worms which originate in the liver and ribs due to which the colour of the person becomes yellow, a condition we know today as jaundice.

  • According to some, the month of Safar flanked by Muharram and Rablul Awwal is full of calamities and misfortune.
With the advent of Islam and the teachings of Rasûlullah sallallahu alayhl wa sallam, all evil and incorrect beliefs common in pre-Islamic times were discarded.

Incorrect Beliefs:

Today too, there are some Muslims who hold incorrect beliefs regarding the month of Safar.
1.A nikâh performed in this month would not be successful.Sayyidina Ali radhiyallahu anhu married Sayyiditina Fatima radhiyallahu anha, (the daughter of Rasûlullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the latter days of Safar 2 A.H.
2.This month is full of misfortune and calamities.
3.To commence any important venture, business etc. during this month will bring bad luck.
4.The first to the thirteenth of Safar is ill-fortune and evil.
5.The person who distributes food or money on the 13th of Safar wiII be saved from its ill-fortune.
6.To celebrate the last Wednesday of Safar and regard it as a holiday.

What to do:

1.To shun all types of erroneous beliefs regarding the blessed month of Safar.

2.To understand that the most unfortunate person is he who disobeys Allâh Ta’âla’s commandments e.g. does not perform the five daily salaah etc. It is narrated in a hadîth that Rasûlullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Pray, 0 Allah! Cause not *anyone *of *us to *be *a *wretched *destitute." *He then asked: "Do *you know *who is *a wretched destitute?" *Upon the request of the Sahabah radhiyallahu anhum he replied, “A wretched *destitute is he who *neglects *his salât. *” (Hadîth).

3.We should understand that all conditions which befalls us, good or bad, favourable, or unfavourable are from Allâh Ta’âla, (as a result of our actions). Allâh Ta’âla says: " Whatever misfortune befalls you, it is due to the things your hands have wrought, and He forgives many a sin." (Surah 42 - Verse 30).
This can also be confirmed by the following Hadîth:
*Sayyidina *Jabir radhiyallahu anhu *has said *that, “I *have *heard *Rasûlullah sallallahu alayhi *wa *sallam *saying, the descending *of *illness and *evil *superstition *befalling *in *the *month *of *Safar is *untrue.” *(Muslim)

JazakAllah =)

Re: At the Doors of Safar :)

Thank you areeba for starting this interesting thread. In Pakistan, I know lots of people who still associate the month of Safar with calamity and try to avoid travel or major financial decisions.

For those who live in Pakistan and have witnessed this, can you share your thoughts and experiences about this??

Re: At the Doors of Safar :)

I remember, my cousins would tell me not to go outside after 12 pm, that jins and bhoots come out at that time. :D

Re: At the Doors of Safar :)

^ 12 AM maybe, whoever heard of jinns/bhoots at noon....

Re: At the Doors of Safar

:naraz:, pm, dopehr ko, when everybody is home resting, streets are empty.

Re: At the Doors of Safar :)

Islam has no distinction attached to the month of safar....
the only place i can find the mention of this month is in the ahadith of Hajj and in the particular hadith mentioned at the very beginning of this thread....

the arabs wud not perform umrah in the months of Hajj and the Prophet (saw) wanted to prove to them that this is wrong hence he performed each of the 4 umrahs that he did in his lifetime during the months of Hajj....
and that is why he ordered the sahaba to perform umrah when they accompanied him for Hajj, so that they wud break away from the practice of not performing umrah in the months of Hajj....
safar was one of these months when arabs wud not perform Hajj....

the second hadith (the one mentioned above) is from the "book of medicine" in sahih bukhari....
the translation of the arabic text wud be like ".... and there is no safar"....
while some scholars have taken this to mean the month of safar, there r scholars who have said that it was a type of disease caused by some worms in the stomach and hence considering it contagious the arabs wud kill anyone who is infected with this disease....
hence the meaning concurrent with the rest of the text in the hadith wud be of the disease rather than the month of safar....

and another meaning of 'safar' too has been explained by ibn hajar in his explanation of sahih bukhari....

Re: At the Doors of Safar :)

I know more than a few people in Pakistan who absolutely refuse to travel any long distances during the month of Safar. No weddings can take place in many families during this month. I am pretty sure when I discussed the reason for all that with some people, they quoted some ahadeeth etc to support their position too. It will be interesting to see if anyone in Pakistan (or whereever) has any visibility on what literature people quote to prolong the idea that Safar is a 'tough' month etc.

Re: At the Doors of Safar :)

I think it stems from the idea that it follows Muharram and some people include the beginning days of Saffar (i think till the 13th) in their 'mourning' (pardon me if this is incorrect, as I am not 100% sure).

I asked my mum n cousin about this 'superstitious' attitude toward the month of Saffar, we are in the Punjab of Pakistan at the moment and they didn't really know of the phenomenon except that people refrained from marriages, business deals, journeys because it was just after Muharram. I don't quite see the logic myself, considering what we have been taught about mourning.

I looked for anything I could find on Saffar and only found, so far, ahadith which emphasize that it is not ominous or cursed. But I am still searching and if I find anything, will post it inshaAllah.

I'll also keep an ear out the next few days and try n identify some of this mysterious literature that brother Faisal says is being quoted.
