Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

By ALICIA CHANG, AP Science Writer

LOS ANGELES - Astronomers announced Friday that they have discovered a new planet larger than Pluto in orbit around the sun. The finding will likely renew debate over what exactly is a planet and whether Pluto should keep its status. The unnamed object — the farthest-known object in the solar system — is currently 9 billion miles away from the sun, or about three times Pluto’s current distance from the sun. Astronomers do not know its exact size, but its brightness shows that it is at least as large as Pluto and could be up to 1 1/2 times bigger.

“This is the first object to be confirmed to be larger than Pluto in the outer solar system,” Michael Brown, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology, said in a telephone briefing.

The briefing was hastily arranged after Brown received word that a secure Web site containing the discovery was hacked and the hacker threatened to release the information.

Brown labeled the object as a 10th planet, but there are scientists who dispute the classification of Pluto as such. There is no official definition for a planet and setting standards like size limits or orbital patterns potentially invites other objects to take the “planet” label.

Brown and colleagues Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory and David Rabinowitz of Yale University first photographed the object in 2003 using a 48-inch telescope at the Palomar Observatory. But it was so far away that its motion was not detected until data was analyzed again this past January. It will take at least six months before astronomers can determine its exact size.

The new planet is rocky and icy, similar to Pluto, and is the third brightest object located in the Kuiper belt, a disc of icy debris beyond the orbit of Neptune, Brown said.

It has taken scientists this long to find the planet because its orbit is at an angle compared to the orbits of most planets.

Alan Stern of the Southwestern Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., said he was not surprised by the discovery since other objects around the size of Pluto have been found in the Kuiper Belt. What’s unique about the latest finding is that the object appears to be bigger than Pluto, he said.

“Unless they’ve made a grave mistake, this is for real,” said Stern, who had no role in the discovery.

On Thursday, another group of astronomers claimed that they found a bright object beyond Neptune, but it turned out to be smaller than Pluto. Brown said his group also found another object that was also brighter but smaller than Pluto.

Brown has submitted a name for the new planet to the International Astronomical Union, which has yet to act on the proposal. He did not release the proposed name.

The research was funded by NASA

Can you state the source?

It’s ironic how nobody named this NEW planet yet. You know how they always name the future discovery even before it’s discovered. :halo:

Following the pattern of (most of) the other planets, it should be named Proserpina. Not only was she the wife of Pluto, but her name means “to emerge.” There is an asteroid with the name already, so perhaps they should use her Greek counterpart (Persephone). Barring that, Minerva (Athena) is probably the most important mythological deity without her own planet.

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

What’s wrong with astronomers! They believe in science yet they name their discoveries after stupid mythical gods.

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

where is the contradiction here?

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

wasnt there a debate that even Pluto may not be a planet after all? And now there is a tenth one???

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

The fact that they are “scientists” and it’s wierd to me that a scientist would name his discovery after some mythical (made-up) god.

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

its a name, and the greek and roman pantheons provide a good set of often hierarchial names with no current day followers for religious sensitivity pitfalls. it is not like scientists are offering prayers at the temple of delphi and dancing like oracles.

what names would you suggest the scientist should pick for astronomical objects?

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

I just thought it was weird for a moment. It’s like you hear the words “scientist” and “mythology” simultaneously and you go wait-wha? But I guess you are right, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Edit: As for what kind of names I would suggest, it’s very unlikely that I will name an object after somebody else. It should be just as unique as the “find” itself. Hence, I don’t need a reason or some made-up set of hierarchial names to name the real findings.

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

The Official 10th Planet !! (scientific name 2003 UB313):

The planet, with the current temporary (and unfortunate) name 2003UB313, was discovered in an ongoing survey at Palomar Observatory’s Samuel Oschin telescope by astronomers Mike Brown (Caltech), Chad Trujillo (Gemini Observatory), and David Rabinowitz (Yale University). We have proposed a name to the IAU and will announce it when that name is accepted. For those speculating that the name proposed is “Lila” based on the web site name I must warn you that that is really just a sentimental dad’s early-morning-after-no-sleep naming of a web site for his three week old daughter and one should not take it too seriously!

Information here will be continually updated as we learn more about this new tenth planet.

What is it?

This new planet (see “What makes a planet?” below) is the largest object found in orbit around the sun since the discovery of Neptune and its moon Triton in 1846. It is larger than Pluto, discovered in 1930. Like Pluto, the new planet is a member of the Kuiper belt, a swarm of icy bodies beyond Neptune in orbit around the sun. Until this discovery Pluto was frequently described as “the largest Kuiper belt object” in addition to being called a planet. Pluto is now the second largest Kuiper belt object, while this is the largest currently known.
Where is it?

The new planet is the most distant object ever seen in orbit around the sun, even more distant than Sedna, the planetoid discovered almost 2 years ago. It is almost 10 billion miles from the sun and more than 3 times more distant than the next closest planet, Pluto and takes more than twice as long to orbit the sun as Pluto.

A view of the solar system from the north down. The four circles show the orbits of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The yellow dot in the center is the sun.
The earth, if it were shown, would be inside the yellow dot representing the sun. The orbits of the two outermost planets, along with their current positions, are also shown.

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

^ That's hot!

The object is too far to be considered the 10th planet in the solar system (in regards to the sun). However, as long as it's inside the Kuiper belt, that's all that matters. Who knows how many more objects they are going to discover!

Edit: Do you think the publishers will add another planet to the list in the text books?

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

Pluto does not really qualify a planet. But if they found another one, they should name it 'goofy' as Jay Leno said. Because Goofy comes after Pluto.

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

This news wasnt supposed to leak out for another year :D
nothing is certain due to lack of proper evidence.

Some hacker entered their database and threatened to expose all data.
Unless they gave up some of the data freely to the world :D

I always back things up :hoonh:

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

^ you almost had me thinking there that you might be the hacker. :hoonh:

So… let me see. Are they going to chuck pluto and replace it with the new planet? hmm. Not fair!

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

I wish I could hack :D

I dont care what they replace. both planets arent useful

Re: Astronomers Claim Discovery of 10th Planet

^ :rotfl: .. I like your theory. :stuck_out_tongue:
