Assuming too much

The less we talk, the more others talk
The less we explain, the more other people assume from our mere talks

We can be sure that our explanations were not enough detailed when readers are guessing incorect conclusions.

I usually feel that their conclusions are nice reflection of their own thoughts, so the best way to know a readers thoughts, might be to be sybilline.

Please discuss

Re: Assuming too much

We didn't find the definition for the word sybilline,

Please explain what you were wanting to say?

Re: Assuming too much

You are right about when we explain less other people assume whatever they want, but this quote also comes to mind:

i would rather shut up and give an impression of a fool than open my mouth and remove all possible doubt.

So sometimes our lengthy explanations/justifications may not mean much or may prove detrimental to ourselves.

Many times people come in with pre-conceptions and its very difficult to counter that.

Re: Assuming too much

lol...is it ironic? (google identify the spelling mistakes;) )

actually sibylline is an adjective derived from "Sibyl" which was a greek oracle, so it means mysterious, prophetic talks (that could be interpreted in many diverse, opposite, ways)

Re: Assuming too much

Ahh... Communication is a two way street. Talking less and explaining less are two different things. A few words can explain a lot and a verbose message may not convey anything. Not always, but mostly, when the others assume something different from what we wanted to convey there is a problem with our communication. Now it may also mean that we have failed to identify how to communicate with the other party.

On the other hand, I think people make conclusions on not how little you say but on what you say. Off course, what people conclude is limited to what experiences they have in their lives. It also depends on the complexity of their imagination.

Re: Assuming too much

i can't deny your well put point.
i'm only wondering to which extent it is true. actually i don't believe anything is false or true. i guess everything is true to some extent, and what people usually fail to see, is the context of occurence of "true" and "false"cases.
