Assignment Penang

Hello Everyone,

I am on assignment in Penang Malaysia for 6 weeks and thought I’d share some pics with you. Penang’s population is comprised of three groups, the Malays, Indians, and Chinese. The main city on the Island is Georgetown, so named by the British who colonized Penang as an outpost in the region before Singapore. The following are sights of this wonderful Island, Enjoy!

Hindu Temple in Little India

Chinese Business atop a Curry House. The various races/religions seem to exist in complete harmony here

The only way to get around Penang, besides your own two feet. These Trishaw drivers are called, “Kings of the road” by the Penangites for their utter disregard for other traffic. Quite a hair raising experience a ride in one of these…not recommended for the faint of heart

More to come!!!

Typical Buddist temple in China town

These are giant incense sticks in the courtyard of the temple

These "Lions" can be found on guard outside most Buddist temples

Assignment Penang

The following are pictures taken at Fort Cornwalis, built by the British. The cannons are pointed out to the sea to ward off Pirates, and the rival Sultanate's Navy.

Assignment Penang _ the Food!

There are many cuisines to be enjoyed on the Island. One of my favorites is Banana Leaf Nasi Kandar:

Nasi = Rice
Kandar = assortment of curries

Other food related vocab:

Mee = noodles
Goreng = Fried

Lets start with some Nasi Kandar shall we!

Please Sir! I want some more!

[thumb=A]Image0111.JPG[/thumb]

Hawker food is its own attraction in Penang. Its cheap, safe, and very good!!!

Kampung House

Kampung = Village.

These are traditional Malay houses out in the country side. They are fast dissappearing. They are built on stilts to ward off snakes

The beach

Most of the beaches on the Island are crowded with tourists this time of year, but I had heard of a secluded beach, but the catch was that to get to the beach one had to hike for an hour through dense jungle. Naturally, I was game. Come join me on the expedition!

We begin here!

[thumb=A]Image153.JPG[/thumb]

The top sign reads "...Pantai Keracut", Pantai means "beach". Keracut beach is where we are headed!

[thumb=A]Image164.JPG[/thumb]

Felt like 100 degrees in there with 100% humidity, and the mosquitos...this beach better be worth it!!!!

[thumb=A]Image167.JPG[/thumb]

Great way to cool off!

[thumb=A]Image136.JPG[/thumb]

The Beach cont.

Almost there!

[thumb=A]Image173.JPG[/thumb]

[thumb=A]Image176.JPG[/thumb]

Just over the bridge and around the corner

[thumb=A]Image177.JPG[/thumb]

The Beach cont.

And here is reward! Powder white sand, emerald green water..and not a soul in sight!!!!

[thumb=A]Image179.JPG[/thumb]

Tomorrow I am heading to Krabi Thailand. This is where the movie, "The Beach" was filmed. I will post pics when I return to Penang next week.

ciao!

Great visual tour from the comfort
of my home. Nasi Kandar looks
like Masala Dosa. If you don't mind
answering, what form of assignment
took you to such an undiscovered
exotic location?

well dont mdin, but I really dont find those pictures as Exotic, I mean if you ahve seen pics of Genting(Malaysia) or Maldives, or Phuket(Thailand) then you wouldnt be calling this place as Exotic..
its an ok sight seeing place thats all for me.

Call me anti~social but it
seems pretty clean, secluded
and dangling on its own, away
from the rest of the densely populated
world. The beaches and/or water
is pretty clean and secluded too.
Exotic in that sense.
