Her winning elections is a good sign. She will listen neither to government nor the politicized Iftikhar Chaudhry. This may create a well-needed balance.
Newly-elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Asma Jahangir has said that the premier Bar of the state would take its decision on its own and not to be exploited for political gains, report said on Friday. Talking to media at Lahore High Court, she said “I will send my suggestions to the Supreme Court to end corruption in the judicial system”. “I have not joined SCBA to pursue anybody’s agenda, I am here to endorse what is right”, an energetic Asma said.
Re: Asma Jahangir wins Supreme Court Bar elections
The only reason she’ll not listen to govt because there is no govt.. but she’ll listen to Babar Awan and Asif Zardari for sure… if anyone have any doubt about it, see what she said about media the moment she find out that she have won…
Asma Jahangir is hte one who get funds for her NGO from unknown sources… but one thing everyone knows that if Western powers or certain think tanks doesn’t like anyone… Aasma is their vocal point for it…

Commentators usually are saying that she will not approve of every measure from govt (even if it means Awan and Zardari).
I certainly am looking for an independent person. And Asma Jahangir's reputation is good in this regard. She doesn't take pressure from anyone.
At least that's what I understand of her. If PPP thinks that Asma will work for them with blind eyes then they will sure get a surprise later.
She was in favor of restoration of judiciary.

I don't know about this claim, but even if true it still won't effect the balance she might bring between judiciary and govt.
The allegation that I am a candidate of the Zardari camp is simply malicious. I am no admirer of any such camp and my criticism of nepotism, corruption and mis-governance by governments has been consistent throughout.

The malice of this report is most apparent from the allegation made against me that I have been in any way defensive of the Musharraf coup. I am on record of having denounced the Musharraf coup, when few spoke up. I made several public statements to this effect. My position is well known and my criticism of political leadership has never been presented as a justification for a military takeover.
My independence has never been compromised and will remain as such. My election, too, will be won on this premise and therefore a desperate attempt is being made to malign and demoralise me. It will not work.

i don't think so that would be the case, how come a non-practicing lawyer won the election??? if you seek the answer for this then many things NEW things shall open to you...
What did she say?
Check out the news papers of next day for the details, in short she was telling media to stay in its limits etc.. now if she had said that to lawyers, it may have made sense but to media... why??? bringing up stories of corruption against govt? lawyers? or what??? that is why i said.. her 1st statement have told us alot that what she is going to do now..
I don't know about this claim, but even if true it still won't effect the balance she might bring between judiciary and govt.
and i saw this quote from you

One reason I am rejoicing her win is that Jamaati Jang's reporters like Ansar Abbasi and Noorani have been so critical of her.

I don't how to talk with you.. when your basis of likes and dislikes are that certain person is being hated by jamaties or is being adored by them... i am sorry.. please consider my above reply to you as null and void.. it is no longer for you
Re: Asma Jahangir wins Supreme Court Bar elections
Its interesting that a non-practicing lawyer would represent the supreme court lawyers!
Isn't it... i think i am not wrong when i say that she was critical of Judiciary on NRO cases... i think it was in capital talk or some other talk show where she criticized the judiciary and when host ask her for the solution she had none... that might have won her the elections
But i do not think that Ms. Jahangir will take dictation/orders from Zardari and Co... although the later thinks otherwise... She normally have her own agenda....
as for the record, it was only few occasions when i agreed with her... and despite the fact that i do not like her views and ideas i still think that she is better person.. alot better then we have on the stage now... and i respect her for that....
Re: Asma Jahangir wins Supreme Court Bar elections
This is not the basis of my “likes and dislikes”. I said “one of the reasons…”.
She won despite a malicious campaign started against her by many.
Even Nawaz Sharif can do nothing but appreciate her:
Speaking about Asma Jahangir’s election as Supreme Court Bar Association president through annual elections, Nawaz said: “She is a person who thinks positively. I am sure she would speak for the supremacy of law and constitution”.

BS...she is a die-hard PPP jiyala and jiyalas are as selective in applying in their own lives what they preach as they come...AJ is a typical liberal-secular hypocrite who invoke human rights and liberalism only when it suits them...
Re: Asma Jahangir wins Supreme Court Bar elections
I am not aware of her joining PPP.
She seemed to be against Zardari’s candidacy. Here is what she said about this issue:
The allegation that I am a candidate of the Zardari camp is simply malicious. I am no admirer of any such camp and my criticism of nepotism, corruption and mis-governance by governments has been consistent throughout. To remind this scribe I would like to draw his attention to my article published in an English newspaper on 19 December 2009. “Another aspect of the judgment” in which I have criticized some aspects of the NRO judgment, where I have stated, “While the NRO can never be defended even on the plea of keeping the system intact the Supreme Court judgment has wider political implications.”
I believe that my criticism of using Article 62(f) as a touchstone for striking down laws was correct. Later, the detailed judgment also bore out this view. I expect that no political faction or other pressure groups will presume to think that my just criticism of any negative trends will not endure despite this candidacy to the Supreme Court Bar Presidency. My views on all important issues are in the public domain and are well-known including my statement on Mr Zardari’s candidacy to the Presidency which was published in newspapers on 26 August 2008.

Stop trying to spread typical lies against the PPP.
Asma Jehangir is not a member of the PPP, although she would a great addition if she ever joined.
