So there was this guy who asked me out couple years back, I turned him down because him and his best friend asked me the same day and I knew something was up and they had decided to see who i would choose, bla bla bla anways I ended up choosing neither even though N was a nice guy and then we had a big fight because he said he wans’t really asking me out he just wanted to hang out as friends. Now I want to hang out as friends, maybe go for lunch or something but I dont know how to approach him without sounding desprate. We haven’t talked for years :-/

but seriously if your invited its usually a good idea to go. That way if you didnt enjoy it you can not go next time, at least you know.
Asking to meet up with someone cane be tricky as you say without looking desperate. Maybe you can find out where they hang out and "accidently" be there, then just go over to them and say hi, etc.
